November 7, 2010 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks (14-2-0-1) won their eighth straight game with a 4-2 victory over the Everett Silvertips (6-5-1-3) Saturday at the Memorial Coliseum in front of 3,422 fans.
The eight game-winning streak is the team's longest since a 15-game streak during the 1997-98 season, and the Winterhawks remain atop the WHL standings with 29 points.
After a scoreless first period, Portland opened the scoring 8:08 into the second when Oliver Gabriel fired a shot from the slot past Everett netminder Kent Simpson to make it 1-0. The Silvertips tied it at the 15:19 mark on a goal by Taylor Cote, and the 1-1 score would stand through the end of the period.
Portland regained the lead 4:44 into the third period when Sven Bartschi scored a goal with assists from Troy Rutkowski and Ty Rattie. The goal allowed Bartschi and Rattie to extend their point streaks to 10 games apiece.
Everett tied it up at the 12:52 mark on a goal by Clayton Cumiskey to make the score 2-2. Later in the period, Brad Ross put Portland up once again with his eighth goal of the season to give the Hawks a 3-2 lead at the 16:38 mark. With under two minutes to go, the Winterhawks took a penalty, and Everett pulled their goaltender to give them a 6-on-4 advantage as they tried to get the tying goal. But Ryan Johansen sealed the win when he put one in the empty net, to give the Hawks a 4-2 win.
Keith Hamilton got the start in net for Portland, his first since October 6, also against the Silvertips, and made 34 saves on 36 shots. Simpson stopped 30 of the 33 Portland shots he faced. The Hawks were 0-1 on the power play, and were a perfect 4-4 on the penalty kill.
Tonight's game was the last home game for two weeks, as the team now leaves for a six-game road trip through the WHL's East Division, beginning Tuesday night when they visit the Swift Current Broncos.
