Crushers Open Final Series with Bang

AVON, Ohio - The Lake Erie Crushers opened the final series of 2010 with their third walk-off victory in four nights, upending the Kalamazoo Kings 1-0 before 4,517 fans on Friday night.

Starting pitchers Travis Risser for Lake Erie and David Goodenough for Kalamazoo continued putting zeroes on the board. Risser pitched 7.2 shutout innings in his final start of the summer, walking one and striking out one. He allowed just six hits and trusted his defense to turn three double plays behind him, adding to the league best total.

David Goodenough worked into the ninth for Kalamazoo before exiting after walking leadoff hitter Wayne Bond. Bond fell behind in the count 0-2 and fouled off a pair of 3-2 offerings before drawing the walk. Andrew Davis greeted reliever Scott Reid by reaching on an error and Lee Huggins posted a bunt single to load the bases. Joel Collins knocked in the lone run of the game with a bouncer up the middle resulting in an infield hit to end the game. Goodenough tossed eight innings and allowed one run on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Ronnie Morales earned the win in relief for the Crushers, his third victory of the homestand. He tossed 1.1 innings in relief of Risser to up his record to 4-2. Lee Huggins recorded three of the six Lake Erie hits. Joel Collins added two including the game-winner.

The final homestand of the season continues tomorrow night with a 7:05 p.m. contest against the Kings. The first 1,000 fans will receive a floppy hat. All-Star RHP Josh Roberts (9-5, 2.69) makes his final start of the summer for the Crushers with RHP Jimmy Stanley (1-4, 4.14) countering for the Kings.

EXTRA SWINGS

- The walk-off victory was the third in four nights for the Crushers; All four wins on the homestand have been one-run contests

- Joel Collins also posted the walk-off hit on Wednesday night, a 10th inning double to center

- Jake Krause appeared at third base for the first time this season, entering as a defensive replacement in the ninth

- The win was the eighth shutout of the season for Lake Erie, three of which have been 1-0 scores

- The victory assured Lake Erie of at least a .500 season for the second consecutive year

- The crowd marked the 17th gathering of over 3,500 this summer; All Pro Freight Stadium hosted 13 crowds of 3,500+ in the 2009 inaugural campaign
