Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
The Traverse City Beach Bums rallied from a 3-0 deficit and exploded for nine runs in the final three innings en route to a 9-3 win over the Washington Wild Things.
The win puts the Beach Bums within two games of clinching their first ever playoff spot. Any combination of two Traverse City wins and Oakland County losses gets the Beach Bums to the second season. The Cruisers were idle on Friday and will play a doubleheader starting at noon on Saturday.
Traverse City and Washington found themselves scoreless through five innings, but in very dissimilar ways. Washington had baserunners in every inning, but Enrique Lechuga was able to work his way out of the trouble in every frame. The Beach Bums were able to see three men reach in the first, but after that Justin Edwards retired the next 13 in a row going through the fifth inning.
Washington would crack the scoreboard first with three unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning, two on a Wilson Matos double for a 3-0 lead.
Traverse City would respond in the bottom of the frame, but it would take a long time to do so. Jason Codiroli led the inning off with a walk. As Matt Brown was heading to the plate, the rain, which had been falling lightly for the majority of the contest intensified to the point that play had to be halted. After the two teams sat for half an hour, the Beach Bums went onto a very patient attack as Brown, Michael Diaz and Chase Burch all walked, the last one forcing home Codiroli to cut the Wild Things lead to 3-1. A J. T. Hall groundout scored Brown to make it 3-2. Brad Miller walked to reload the bases with one out. Following a pop-out, Andrew Franco came up and lined a single into left to score Diaz and Burch for a 4-3 Traverse City lead. Jonathan Alia followed suit, singling into center to make it 5-3.
The Beach Bums continued the offense scoring three in the seventh, two on a Miller single, and one in the eighth to round out the scoring.
Scott Dunn (1-2) earned his first professional victory going 3.1 hitless innings. Justin Edwards (5-2) took the loss for Washington.
Offensively, Alia recorded two hits while Franco drove in a pair of runs.
The series continues tomorrow at 7:05 with Michael Moore (8-6, 3.53) on the mound for Traverse City against Matt Rossignol (0-3, 8.48) for Washington. It is the final Silent Auction Saturday of the year. Tomorrow night the Beach Bums and Culver Meadows team up to auction off the Beach Bums throwback jerseys with the proceeds going to benefit Northwest Michigan Alzheimer's.
