Kelowna Rockets News Release

The Kelowna Rockets broke training camp Thursday with two team practises and plenty of decisions to be made heading into a pair of exhibition games on the weekend.

The Rockets and Vancouver Giants will play Friday night in Ladner and Saturday night in Kelowna to open the WHL pre season schedule for both teams, similarly still carrying large pre season rosters.

The Rockets will carry over 40 players into the pair of games, giving newcomers and veterans alike a chance to hit the ice in a competitive setting.

"The exhibition games are certainly going to be the deciding factor," said Lorne Frey, the Rockets director of player personnel. "We're going to give some guys an opportunity in the exhibition games as to whether they stay or go home for more development."

Kelowna started the week with 80 players and will have to get down to the 25 that WHL teams can carry through the year before the start of the season Sept. 25. Training camp saw 130 rookies paired down to 80 and now to about 40.

"Overall we're pleased with the talent we have," said Frey. "We have some difficult decisions to make."

In all, Kelowna will play six WHL exhibition games: Three home and three away. All games in Kelowna will be the back-half of home and home series with the Rockets closest rivals Vancouver, Kamloops and Chilliwack.

Interestingly Kelowna can see the Rockets play every Saturday in September. The Rockets host Vancouver this Saturday, Kamloops next Saturday and Chilliwack on Saturday Sept. 18 in pre season play. On Saturday Sept. 25, the Rockets open the WHL season against Prince George.
