The Rochester Red Wings today announced that former Major League managers Don Zimmer and Jim Frey will be on hand to honor Rochester's Mr. Baseball Joe Altobelli when a life size statue of Alto in his 1971 Red Wings uniform will be unveiled in a pre-game ceremony prior to the Sunday, September 5 game vs. the Buffalo Bisons.

The statue unveiling will take place in the Walk of Fame area, near the Plymouth Avenue (inside the gates) entrance at Frontier Field. Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. with the ceremony starting at 5:45 p.m.

Don Zimmer managed the Boston Red Sox (1976-80), Texas Rangers (1981-83) and Chicago Cubs (1988-90) winning the National League East and National League Manager of the Year in 1989. Zimmer went on to serve as bench coach for New York Yankees' manager Joe Torre during the Yankees last dynasty (1996-2003). Alto was Zimmer's bench coach in Chicago and the two have been friends for many years.

Jim Frey, a life long friend of Don Zimmer (they were teammates in High School), managed the Kansas City Royals (1980-81) and Chicago Cubs (1984-86) leading both the Royals to the American League West title in 1980 and the Cubs to the National League East title in 1984 (first post-season appearance since 1945). Frey was also on the Baltimore Orioles' coaching staff under Earl Weaver from 1970-79 winning three American League pennants and one World Series Championship.

Featured speakers for the statue unveiling include, Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks, Rochester Mayor Robert Duffy, International League President Randy Mobley, Red Wings President/CEO/COO Naomi Silver and Don Fazio from the Red Wings 1971 team.

The first 2,000 fans through the gates will receive a Joe Altobelli card strip.

The life size bronze statue is being created by Randolph Rose Collection.
