Vancouver Canadians News Release
Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, BC) - A late surge from the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes was enough to stop the Vancouver Canadians for the second straight night as the C's fell 5-4 on Saturday night in front of a sellout (5,157) crowd at Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium.
Salem opened the scoring in the top of the 1st inning when Canadians RHP Nathan Long gave up three straight singles including one off the bat of RF Jose Medina that cashed in LF Ryan Scoma giving the Volcanoes a 1-0 lead.
Vancouver would respond with three runs in the home half of the 2nd inning. LF Jeff Bercume's 9th double of the summer scored 3B Tony Thompson giving the Canadians a 3-1 lead.
The Canadians lead was short lived as Salem-Keizer drew even in the top of the 3rd inning picking up four singles off of RHP Nathan Long. The tying run crossed when SS Carter Jurica cashed in DH Daniel Burkhart evening the game at 3-3.
Vancouver grabbed their second lead of the game in the bottom of the 3rd inning when RF Douglas Landaeta singled, advanced to third base on a single from SS Wade Kirkland and scored on a ground out from 3B Tony Thompson giving the Canadians a 4-3 lead.
Pitching for both teams took over until the top of the 7th inning. Canadians manager Rick Magnante went to his bullpen and pulled out LHP Jake Brown. After getting leadoff hitter 1B Carlos Quintana to strike out, Brown would walk CF Chris Lofton who would then advance to second base on a ground out and score when Canadians CF Michael Choice struggled with a line drive that hit him in his glove and popped out. Choice was charged with an error and the Volcanoes and C's were tied at 4-4.
In the top of the 9th inning, the Canadians again reached into their bullpen pulling out RHP Blake Hassebrock. Salem-Keizer 3B John Eshleman would draw a leadoff walk, advance to second base on a sacrifice bunt from 1B Carlos Quintana and score when C Mike Murray scorched a single up the middle giving the Volcanoes a 5-4 lead.
Salem-Keizer closer RHP Stephen Harrold would come in and lock up his 7th save of the summer retiring the Canadians in order as Vancouver would fall to 21-9 (.700) in the Northwest League's second half standings.
