New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - Chris Province took a perfect game into the seventh inning and Jair Fernandez hit a two-run homer to lead the Rock Cats to a 3-1 victory over Richmond on Wednesday night.

Province retired the first 19 batters he faced before allowing a base hit to Brad Boyer with one out in the seventh. Thomas Neal followed with a double that broke up the shutout and put the Flying Squirrels on the board, 3-1.

The Rock Cats gave Province an early lead to work with. In the second, Richmond starter Mike MacDonald plunked Steve Singleton with a pitch to start off the inning. That brought Fernandez to the plate and he slammed a 2-1 pitch over the left field wall to put the Rock Cats on the board, 2-0.

In the fifth, Mark Dolenc led off with a single through the hole at shortstop. He then stole second with one out and came around to score on a fielder's choice off Estarlin De Los Santos' bat for a 3-0 lead.

Province (6-5) only struck out one but walked none and limited the Flying Squirrels to two hits through 6 2/3 innings. Carlos Gutierrez came on in relief and fired 2 1/3 shutout innings to notch his second save.

MacDonald (4-8) tossed a solid seven innings - allowing three runs on four hits - but suffered the loss. He struck out six.
