Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
Dustin Pedroia arrived to provide a spark, but it was an all-around effort on the offensive side that sent the PawSox to a 6-4 win over Buffalo at McCoy Stadium Saturday night.
On the DL since suffering a foot fracture on June 25th in San Francisco, Pedroia started at second in the first of a scheduled two-game rehab stint in Pawtucket. He went 1-3 on the night, singling and scoring in the third and walking in the seventh. He is expected to be the DH on Sunday before returning to the Red Sox lineup Tuesday night against the Angels.
It was an inauspicious start for the PawSox once again as Adam Mills gave up a solo shot to Justin Turner in the first inning to fall behind, 1-0. The Bisons doubled their lead in the third when Turner singled, went to third on a double by Lucas Duda, and then scampered home on a wild pitch.
The PawSox dinked and dunked their way back in the bottom half of the third. Niuman Romero led off with a walk, and singles by Josh Reddick and Daniel Nava brought him home to make it 2-1. Pedroia then hit a ball up the middle that deflected off Buffalo starter Michael Antonini for an infield single and loaded the bases. After Antonini hit Carlos Delgado with a pitch to send home the tying run, Lars Anderson put the PawSox ahead with another infield single that died between the pitcher and first baseman. Pedroia subsequently came home with the fourth run on a sacrifice fly from Yamaico Navarro.
Single runs in the fourth and fifth on RBI doubles by J.R. House and Duda tied the game once more, but the PawSox went ahead for good in the bottom of the sixth when Navarro homered to deep left. Jeremy Hermida, aboard on a single, scored an insurance run on a double by Romero.
Justin Turner was unstoppable for much of the game, garnering a home run, two singles, a walk, and two runs scored in his first four trips to the plate. He was finally retired in the ninth when Anderson stopped his line drive with a leaping grab. Anderson landed on top of the first-base bag, doubling up Jesus Feliciano to end the game.
Robert Manuel (6-2) hurled three innings of scoreless relief in relief of Mills to get the win, while Tommy Hottovy pitched the eighth and Fernando Cabrera the ninth for his 14th save. Antonini (1-1) took the loss for Buffalo, giving up six runs on nine hits in six innings.
The teams go at it again Sunday at 1:05 as Rich Hill (1-0, 3.08) takes the mound for the PawSox against Raul Valdes (1-0, 0.93) of Buffalo.
