Yankees Stomp PawSox Sunday Afternoon

August 8, 2010 - International League (IL1)
Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

The PawSox entered Sunday's game hoping to secure a split in their four-game series with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to close out an eight-game homestand. Instead, the Yankees scored seven runs in the first inning and never looked back, rolling to a third straight win by a score of 12-3.

Facing PawSox started Adam Mills, Kevin Russo led off with a double. Colin Curtis and Brandon Laird singled. Juan Miranda and Jesus Montero doubled. Mills got the next two men out, but then he hit Chad Huffman and surrendered a three-run homer to ninth hitter Greg Golson to make it 7-0.

The Yankees tacked on the rest of the way, scoring single runs in the second, fourth, fifth, sixth, and ninth, backed by 17 hits and aided by four PawSox errors, a season-high.

In the second, Colin Curtis doubled to lead off, moved to third on a ground out, and then got caught off third after a fly ball to center for the second out. Catcher Dusty Brown threw the ball away, though, and Curtis raced home.

Yamaico Navarro's error at short in the third proved harmless, but in the fourth, a throwing error by Gil Velazquez at second after an infield hit allowed Juan Miranda to come home with the ninth Yankees run.

Huffman homered to lead off the fifth and put the Yankees into double digits. In the sixth, Navarro booted a grounder off the bat of Golson for his second error to extend the inning, and then the Yankees plated another run when Russo followed that with a two-out RBI single. Curtis completed the scoring with a solo home run to right-center off Fernando Cabrera in the ninth.

Adam Mills (2-8) came out after 3.1 innings having given up nine runs (eight earned) on 11 hits. Tommy Hottovy gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits in 2.1 innings of relief, and Santo Luis impressed by setting down all seven men he faced.

The PawSox got on the board in the second when Navarro hit his first Triple-A home run over the wall in left. They picked up two more in the seventh when Navarro singled with one out and Jorge Jimenez followed with a homer to right. But Yankees starter David Hirsh (8-7) avoided further damage, limiting the PawSox to three runs on eight hits in eight innings.

Josh Reddick did manage to extend his hitting streak to nine games, though his 1-5 afternoon dropped his average during the streak under .500 (20-42, .476).

The PawSox now follow the Yankees back to Scranton for two more games. Rich Hill (1-0, 3.80) tries to turn things around on the road against Kei Igawa (2-3, 5.62) Monday night at 7:05.
