Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Burlington, IA - Kirby Yates threw a career-high seven innings, carrying a no-hitter into the fifth as the Hot Rods evened up their series with the Burlington Bees thanks to a 7-0 win. Yates got plenty of offensive support as the Hot Rods scored in each of the first five innings to even their second half record at 10-10.

The fireworks began right away in the first inning for the Hot Rods. For the third time in his eight games in a Hot Rods uniform, Cody Rogers led off the contest with a towering home run to right field. The blast was Rogers' fifth since joining the Bowling Green roster and gave the Hot Rods an early 1-0 lead.

They added to that lead against starter Matt Mitchell in the second inning. Ryan Wiegand drew a lead-off walk and then took second on a single by Bennett Davis. Gabe Cohen followed with a single to left field to score Wiegand for a 2-0 lead. On the play, Davis was thrown out at third allowing Cohen to take second. He would score on the next pitch when Robi Estrada hooked a double down the line to bump the margin to 3-0.

In the third, it was a two-out rally that produced another Hot Rods run. Mark Thomas smoked a triple to deep center field and then scored on a single to right from Wiegand to make it 4-0.

An inning later it was two more runs, once again with two outs. Relief pitcher Rodolfo Encarnacion gave up a lead-off single and a walk before striking out Ty Morrison. With Cody Rogers at the plate, Gabe Cohen was picked off second base for the second out of the inning. When it looked like Burlington would get out of the inning, Encarnacion walked the bases loaded before a pair of errors on a Brett Nommensen grounder scored two more runs to extend the lead to 6-0.

Bowling Green made it five straight innings with a run in the top of the fifth when Wiegand doubled and then took third on a single by Davis. Two batters later, Robi Estrada picked up his second RBI of the game to plate Wiegand with a sacrifice fly for a 7-0 Hot Rods advantage.

While all the offense was pouring in, Kirby Yates was cruising right along. He retired the first six Bees he faced before issuing a lead-off walk in the third to Luis Del Rosario. That runner was stranded when Yates retired the next three hitters in the third, followed by a 1-2-3 fourth. In the fifth, he retired the first two men before a weak infield single by Del Rosario broke up his no-hitter. Yates settled down to strikeout Julio Aparicio to end the inning, stranding Del Rosario for a second time.

Yates ended up going seven shutout innings, the longest outing of his career. The righty allowed just two hits with a pair of walks and six strikeouts. He is now 2-1 in seven starts with a 1.95 ERA in 37.0 innings.

Deivis Mavarez worked the final two innings to preserve the Hot Rods seventh shutout of the season.

Wiegand led the Hot Rods 11-hit attack, going 2-4 with another double and his third RBI of the series. A night after the Hot Rods received one hit from their final four hitters, the bottom of the line-up stepped up in a big way. Davis, Cohen, and Estrada all had two hits, combining to score three runs and drive in another three. Rogers also had a pair of hits and two walks, reaching base in four of five plate appearances.

The two teams wrap up their series on Friday night at 6:30 PM CDT. RHP Alexander Colome (6-5, 3.21) gets the ball for the Hot Rods against Burlington RHP Dusty Odenbach (4-6, 4.27). You can follow the game on the radio with Tom Gauthier beginning at 6:15 PM CDT on 1340 AM WBGN and www.bghotrods.com.
