Peoria Chiefs News Release
The Peoria Chiefs bullpen helped Nick Struck get his third win of the season as the Chiefs defeated the Dayton Dragons by the score of 3-1 on Thursday night. The win improves the Chiefs to 6- 12 in the second half and 44-43 overall. The Chiefs got on the board in the third off starter Ricky Bowen. Charles Thomas led off with a double and advanced to third on a Francisco Guzman sacrifice bunt. Hak-Ju Lee drove in Thomas on a groundout to second to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead. The Chiefs added to their lead in the sixth still facing Bowen. Logan Watkins walked and advanced to second on a balk. Matt Cerda grounded out to advance Watkins to third and a DJ Fitzgerald sacrifice fly brought him home to make it 2-0. Struck dominated the Dragons through six innings without allowing a run. With one out in the third inning and runners on the corners he kept the Dragons off the board thanks to a strikeout and a groundout. In the fourth he got some help from his defense. Henry Rodriguez doubled to start the inning before Struck got the next two batters to strike out. Ryan LaMarre singled to right but Nelson Perez gunned Rodriguez down at the plate for the final out. In the sixth inning a pair of Thomas errors allowed Didi Gregorius to reach third base, but Struck utilized a fly out and a strikeout to finish his day without allowing a run. Peoria added another run in the seventh off reliever Ezequiel Infante. Luis Flores walked and advanced to second on a Thomas sacrifice bunt. Jae-Hoon Ha singled up the middle to put Flores on third before Lee grounded into a fielders' choice to score the run and make it 3-0 Chiefs. The Dragons finally got on the board in the ninth inning off reliever Steven Grife. With two outs in the inning Chris Richburg hammered a pitch over the left field wall to make it 3-1. Grife got the next batter to pop out to first base in foul territory to end the game. Struck (3-8), pitched six shutout innings while allowing three hits and striking out nine to get the win. Daniel Keefe pitched two perfect innings while striking out two. Grife pitched the final inning and gave up one run on one hit while striking out one.
