Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars, in conjunction with the Oakland Athletics, have announced that pitchers Kenny Smalley and Chris Mederos have joined the Cougars. Pitcher Jose Pina has been transferred to Class-A Advanced Stockton while pitcher Rob Gilliam has been placed on the disabled list. The latest move keeps the Cougars' roster at 25 active players as the team continues a homestand this evening at 6:30 p.m. against the South Bend Silver Hawks.
Smalley (24th Rd, 2008) makes his return to Geneva after spending the '09 season as a Cougar. A graduate of St. Charles North High School, Smalley was the first-ever Cougars player from the Tri-Cities, was a Midwest League All-Star last season, and led the A's farm system in ERA last season with a 2.73 mark in '09. Smalley comes to the Cougars via Stockton, and was 3-6 in 18 games, including 12 starts. Mederos (25th Rd, 2009) returns to the Cougars after being placed on the disabled list May 4 with a right shoulder injury. Within the past 10 days, Mederos has pitched in two games with the Rookie League Arizona A's to prepare for his return to Geneva. At the time of his injury in May, Mederos held a 1.88 ERA through five starts at Kane County.
Gilliam (8th Rd, 2009) is tied with Dan Straily for most starts this season among Cougars pitchers with 18, and leads the club in innings pitched (100.2). Pina, who signed with A's last offseason as a minor league free agent, made 13 appearances with the Cougars out of the bullpen and leaves with a 2-1 record and 3.74 ERA.
