July 7, 2010 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
In the last of a four game series, the Kannapolis Intimidators salvage a split with the first-place Greenville Drive at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Wednesday night in a 7-4 victory. The Intimidators came from 4-2 down in the fourth to win the ballgame.
The game started on a strong note as the Intimidators (5-9) saw their starter Andre Rienzo throw a 1-2-3 top of the first before in the bottom of the inning where the first two, Daniel Wagner and Mike Richard singled. After back-to-back strikeouts and a double steal put runners on second and third, Nick Ciolli delivered a two-run single to put the Intimidators ahead 2-0.
The game stayed at 2-0 as the Drive (10-4) starter Kendal Volz settled down, but Rienzo (1-4) struggled in the fourth. Rienzo would end up going six innings allowing four runs, but all four runs and four of the six hits occurred in a row in the fourth. Four runs came home in the inning, putting the Drive ahead by two, 4-2.
In the bottom of the inning, the Intimidators scored Ian Gac on an RBI-single by Jose Vargas to make it 4-3, but the big inning would occur in the sixth. In the sixth, against a new pitcher, Anatanaer Batista, Gac walked, followed by a two-run home run for Ciolli to dead center to give the Intimidators a 5-4 lead. Ciolli had a season-high four RBIs on the game. Later in the inning Miguel Gonzalez reached on a fielder's choice before Jake Oester sent a pop up to right field. On the play the right fielder lost the ball in the twilight sky, allowing Oester to wind up at second and Gonzalez third. The mistake was punished by Wagner as he singled them both home to take a 7-4 lead. Volz the starter got a no decision working five and allowing three runs and Batista (2-4) worked one in the loss and allowed four runs.
By virtue of taking the lead, Rienzo was in line for the victory after the sixth and with two scoreless from Garrett Johnson and a 1-2-3 ninth inning for Orlando Santos, his third save in as many appearances, the Intimidators held on to give Rienzo his first win.
The Intimidators are 4-3 in their last seven games in the month of July and leave Kannapolis to travel to Augusta, GA to take on the GreenJackets for the first of a five game series tomorrow. Matt Hopps goes for his second win of the season and the GreenJackets will have 2009 first round pick Zack Wheeler pitch the first inning before Andy Reichard takes over. The game will begin at 7:05 pm.
