State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE - The State College Spikes received a solo homer from Adalberto Santos early, but it was a five-run seventh inning that put away the Williamsport Crosscutters and earned the Spikes a series sweep in an 8-2 win on Saturday night at Historic Bowman Field.
Â
Walker Gourley had the backbreaking base hit for State College (9-7) in the big seventh inning, knocking in two runs with a single to right. Santos and new Spike Matt Curry also drove in runs in the frame as State College notched all five runs with two outs.
Â
Santos's fourth-inning home run, his second of the year, opened up the Spikes' scoring and tied the game, 1-1. The Oregon State product finished the game 3-for-5 with three runs batted in, increasing his streak of consecutive games on base to 13.
Â
Curry, in his first game with the Spikes after starring on TCU's College World Series squad, singled on the very first pitch he saw in the second inning, and went 2-for-4 with his seventh-inning RBI.
Â
Miguel Mendez also put together a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Â
Casey Sadler (1-0) earned the win for the Spikes in his first professional appearance. Sadler, the Pirates' 25th-round draft pick in 2010, went two scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out two. Zac Fuesser (1) picked up the save with three scoreless innings to finish off the victory, striking out four in the process.
Â
State College starter Zack Von Rosenberg allowed two runs on four hits and a walk over four innings, striking out four.
Â
Williamsport (7-9) starter Julio Rodriguez (1-2) took the loss after being tagged with the first two runs of the seventh inning. Rodriguez allowed a total of four runs, three earned, on five hits and a walk. The right-hander also struck out seven in his six-and-two-thirds innings of work.
Â
The victory enabled the Spikes to earn their first series sweep of 2010, and knot the all-time SawBuck Series standings at 27-27. State College is now tied with the Jamestown Jammers for first place in the Pinckney Division.
Â
Sunday, the Spikes return home for the Fourth of July as they welcome the Hudson Valley Renegades, affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays, to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for a special 1 p.m. matchup. State College will send left-hander Zack Dodson (0-0) to the mound for his fourth start of the season. Dodson will face Hudson Valley righty Nate Garcia (1-0).
Â
Spikes fans will be able to enjoy a multitude of fun activities at the park, starting with a pre-game catch on the field. Also, the All-You-Can-Eat seats in the left field Picnic Pavilion will be available for just $19 to adults and just $17 to children, allowing access to an unlimited ballpark menu of hamburgers, hot dogs, chef's specials, nachos, cookies and soda from noon to the seventh inning.
Â
Following the game, kids can run the bases thanks to HealthSouth Nittany Valley Rehabilitation Hospital. Approximately one hour after the game, the ballpark will then reopen to allow fans a great view of the 4th Fest fireworks. Admission is free, and the world-renowned fireworks show will begin at 9 p.m.
