Salem RidgeYaks News Release
Winston-Salem, NC (June 27, 2010)- Ozzie Lewis continued his dominance over the Salem Red Sox with four hits, including two towering home runs, as the Winston-Salem Dash knocked Brock Huntzinger out in the third inning and went on to wallop the Sox 13-6 at BB&T Ballpark on Sunday evening. The loss was the second straight for Salem, and the Sox have yielded 13 runs and 17 hits on back-to-back nights.
The Red Sox jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top half of the first, but the Sox surrendered the next eight runs to fall behind 8-2 after three innings of play. Salem's early runs came thanks to an error by third baseman Jon Gilmore that allowed Alex Hassan to reach, followed by consecutive doubles from Ryan Lavarnway and Oscar Tejeda, giving Salem a quick 2-0 advantage off Dash starter Terry Doyle.
But Huntzinger was unable to maintain the early edge, giving up two runs in the first and three in both the second and third frames. Despite retiring the first two batters in the first, Huntzinger gave up three straight base hits, including an RBI single by Lewis to tie the game at 2. After putting two on with one out in the second, the righthander served up an RBI single to Brandon Short and a two-run triple to Eduardo Escobar to make it 5-2. Lewis led off the third with a solo jack and Justin Greene knocked Huntzinger out of the game four batters later with a mammoth two-run tater to left-center to make it 8-2 after 3.
Making his first start since appearing in the California-Carolina League All-Star Game on Tuesday, Huntzinger (6-4) suffered his roughest outing of the year, allowing eight runs on nine hits in just two and two-thirds innings on the mound.
The Sox cut the lead to 8-4 in the fifth thanks to back-to-back doubles by Ryan Dent and Jon Hee. Hee's two-bagger scored Dent and Lavarnway brought home Hee with a two-out single to pull Salem within four at the midway point of the contest.
After harmlessly singling in the fourth, Lewis put the game away with a three-run round-tripper in the sixth off Will Latimer to put the Dash up 11-4. The Winston designated hitter is now 14-for-27 (.519) in seven contests against the Red Sox this year with three doubles, three homers and nine RBI.
Tejeda brought in the final two runs of the game for Salem in the final three innings, as he singled in Hee with two outs in the seventh and drove in Hassan with an RBI groundout in the ninth. Tejeda finished the evening with his 27th multi-hit game of the year, going 2-for-4 with three RBI.
The Sox second baseman was joined in the multi-RBI department by Lavarnway, who brought home two runners to increase his Carolina League leading RBI total to 56 on the year. Hassan and Hee added two hits apiece to add to Salem's 11-hit effort.
The two Southern Division rivals are back at it Monday night for game two of the three-game set at 7:00 PM. Michael Lee makes his first start of the year for the Sox against Winston's Leroy Hunt, who will make his first career start for the Dash.
