Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
The Hillcats came back from a three-run deficit early in the game, but couldn't come all the way back a second time. Lynchburg drops the series opener to Myrtle Beach 11-8.
The Pelicans got on the board in the first inning. Cory Harrilchak scored on a wild pitch and Dan Nelson drove in two with a two-out double to put Myrtle Beach up 3-0.
The Cats scored once in the first inning. Felix Perez hit a two-out double and was driven home by Neftali Soto's double.
In the second, Lynchburg tied the ballgame. Kyle Day and Shane Carlson led off the inning with successive singles. Jordan Wideman hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Day, and Carlson scored on a Perez double. That tied the game at three.
But the Pelicans struck again for two more in the fourth. Luis Sumoza led off the inning with a single and later scored on a fielding error by Josh Fellhauer. Cole Miles also scored in the inning on a groundout by Harrilchak.
The Cats got one back in the same inning. Wideman singled and scored on Cody Puckett's triple.
Myrtle got some insurance in the seventh. Four straight Pelicans reached, the last two on RBI doubles. Nelson added another RBI and Sumoza notched two.
But in the bottom of that inning, Lynchburg drew back within one. With two runners on and one out, Kyle Day hit a drive that looked to be off the video board in right-center field. However the ball was ruled in-play, and Day settled for a two-RBI triple. Shane Carlson drove Day in with a sac fly in the next at-bat.
The Pelicans scored three more in the top of the ninth. Three walks and an error contributed to the runs in the inning, as Myrtle Beach registered only one hit.
Josh Fellhauer hit his fifth home run to lead off the bottom of the ninth, but reliever Luis Avilan retired the next three batters to end the game.
Lance Janke started and threw five innings for Lynchburg. He gave up five runs, but only four were earned. However, Janke is saddled with the loss and moves to 3-5 on the season.
Lynchburg and Myrtle Beach continue their three-game series tomorrow at 7:05. Curtis Partch (2-5, 3.62) starts for the Hillcats opposite Julio Teheran (3-1, 1.38) for the Pelicans. City Stadium features 50-cent hot dogs presented by ABC 13.
