VS. MYRTLE BEACH: The Hillcats are 3-3 against the Pelicans this season...They went 12-8 against the Birds last season and were 7-4 at BB&T Coastal Field...Lynchburg's 10-3 win at Myrtle Beach last season on June 16th clinched the first half Northern Division Championship...Myrtle Beach has the all-time advantage in the series 121-105, and they are 56-55 in the Hill City...
GOING GREEN: Last night the Hillcats wore their green jerseys for the second straight game and they won both of those games...This after they started the season 0-5 with the alternate jerseys on...
MOVERS AND SHAKERS: The Hillcats have made several moves since the all-star break and made another one yesterday when they added OF Felix Perez to the roster and placed RHP Nick Christiani on the Disabled List...Perez was promoted from the Rookie Dominican Reds...Lynchburg also recently promoted RHP Brad Boxberger and INF Carlos Mendez to Double-A Carolina...Boxberger, who was the Hillcats lone All-Star in the first half, was seventh in the Carolina League in ERA (3.20, fifth in strikeouts (70) and second in strikeout per nine innings ratio (10.03)...Mendez was hitting a team-leading .296 and had a team-best 73 hits...INF Alex Buchholz, INF Miguel Rojas and Christiani were placed on the Disabled List and RHP Chase Ware and INF Shane Carlson were promoted to Lynchburg from Low-A Dayton...
SECOND CHANCE: OF Felix Perez was promoted from the Rookie Dominican Reds yesterday and went 1-for-4 with a run scored last night in his United States debut...In 16 games in the DSL, he was batting .429 with a home run and 14 RBI...Perez was set to sign a 3.5 million dollar deal with the Yankees last year before Major League Baseball suspended him for lying abut his age (he claimed he was 20)...The Reds signed the outfielder for $550,000 to a minor league contract and he will make his debut in the country last night...
SO GRAND TO SEE YOU: OF Kyle Day hit a grand slam in the top of the fourth inning last night that turned a two-run deficit for the Hillcats into a two-run lead they would not relinquish...It was his first career grand salami, the first by a Hillcat this season and the first against Kinston this year as well...Day entered the series against the Indians with 15 RBI in 46 games and drove-in five runs in two games in the set...
SHOWING NO WARE: RHP Chase Ware made his High-A debut last night with Lynchburg and did not allow a run in an inning and 1/3 of work to pick-up the hold...With Low-A Dayton the right-hander was 3-1 with a 1.84 ERA and seven saves in 21 games in relief...
JUMP RIGHT IN: INF Shane Carlson went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored Friday night in his Hillcats debut...He was batting .275 with a home run and 25 RBI in 38 games with Low-A Dayton before his promotion Friday...Carlson was a 32nd round selection of the Reds last year out of UC Santa Barbara...
NOT SO GREENE: UTIL Brodie Greene went 4-for-5 with a double, an RBI, a run and a walk Friday night...It was his first double, RBI, run scored and multi-hit game as a professional...In just his fourth game as a pro he became just the third Hillcat this season to knock four hits in one game (UTIL Neftali Soto, 5/1 and C Devin Mesoraco, 5/10)...Greene was promoted to Lynchburg from Rookie Billings last Friday and made his professional debut that night...He batted second and started at short stop and went 1-for-5 with his first career hit as a pro...Just ten days earlier he was playing his final collegiate game for Texas A&M in the NCAA Coral Gables Regional...The Aggies lost to Miami in the regional, a team that was led by C Yasmani Grandal, who was the Reds first round selection (12th overall) in this year's draft...Greene was the fourth round selection of the Reds in the same draft and batted .395 with 14 homers, 55 RBI and 23 steals in 65 games this season with the Aggies...Greene was a second-team All-Big 12 selection and in his college days he played every defensive position except catcher and first base...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP J.J. Hoover was selected by the Braves in the 10th round of the 2008 draft out of Calhoun (AL) Community College...He made his professional debut that same year with Rookie Danville and went 1-0 with no earned runs allowed in two relief appearances...Last season he spent the majority of the season with full season Low-A Rome and he posted a 7-6 mark with a 3.35 ERA and one save in 25 games (18 starts)...He also made one start with Myrtle Beach and took a no-decision as he allowed three runs in three innings of work...This season he has made 14 starts with the Pelicans and is 4-5 with a 4.14 ERA...Hoover entered the season ranked as the 11th best prospect in the Braves minor league system according to Baseball America...In his lone start against Lynchburg he gave up three runs in four and 2/3 innings of work in a no-decision...
