Normal CornBelters News Release
NORMAL, IL - The Normal CornBelters, presented by the Illinois Corn Farmers, knocked off the visiting Gateway Grizzlies for the second straight game by the score of 3-2 Sunday evening at the Corn Crib in Normal. Normal's offense was held in check until they were able to break through with a pair of runs in the sixth inning and the eventual winning run in the seventh.
The CornBelters starter Tyler Lavigne surrendered two first inning runs before settling in and shutting down the Grizzlies offense the rest of the way to earn the complete game. Lavigne tallied seven strike outs and only gave up four hits, with only two coming after the first inning. With the win Lavigne improved his season record to 6-2.
Gateway starter Mark Brackman was nearly unhittable through the first five innings before CornBelters' shortstop Jeff Cowan was hit by a pitch in the sixth inning to start the scoring as he came around to score on a Daniel Cox double who also scored in the inning. Cowan then knocked in the go ahead run in the seventh with a two out RBI single. Cowan finished the night 1-3 with that RBI and a run scored. Left fielder Asif Shah went 3-3 with three singles.
The two teams meet for the series finale tomorrow at 7:05 pm with Dan Blewett taking the mound for Normal. The game can be heard on WEZC and WJBC.com.
