Washington Wild Things News Release
Crestwood, Ill. - Timely strikeouts and stranded base runners both played a part Sunday night as the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, lost to the Windy City Thunderbolts, 5-2.
The Wild Things were fortunate to keep it that close throughout, as the Thunderbolts loaded the bases on five separate occasions. They could not take advantage and bust the game open though, with the Wild Things pitching out of the jams several times. The Thunderbolts got all the runs they needed however, as the Wild Things again could not find their offensive touch. Despite multiple hits from Luis Rivera and Denny Duron, Washington scored only two runs, both in the third inning.
Zach Aahkus, Guillermo Martinez, and Kent Gerst all starred in the win for Windy City. Aahkus went 3-3 and scored two runs. He also reached base five times in the game. Gerst had only one hit, but it drove in two of Thunderbolt runs, and Martinez went 2-3 with one RBI.
Windy City scored runs in each of the first four innings. Aahkus scored from first after Gilberto Mejia drove an RBI double to the outfield. They continued scoring into the second inning after Martinez lined a ball past Wild Things' first baseman Adam Amar, loading the bases. Gerst then hit his two-RBI double scoring Mike Torres and Tim Alberts.
The Wild Things attempted to claw back into the game in top of the third with Duron hitting a leadoff single. He made his way around the bases thanks to a walk by Chris Sidick and a fielder's choice from Michael Parker. John Delaney then drove him in with an RBI groundout, cutting the score to 3-1. Parker scored from second on Jacob Dempsey's RBI double to deep outfield pulling Washington within one.
The Thunderbolts pulled away scoring one run in each of the next two innings. Martinez scored J.T. Resko in the bottom of the third after the bases were loaded. In the bottom of the next inning, Aahkus led off with a double and scored on Ryan Basham's sacrifice fly to make the score 5-2.
Windy City's pitching retired 12 batters in a row at one point, never allowing the Wild Things to get in an offensive groove. Windy City starter Joe Scumachi collected his first win of the season, going five innings and allowing two runs on seven hits. Nick Hall got his fourth save of the season. For the Wild Things, Zach Rosenbaum allowed five runs on nine hits in his five innings of action in the loss.
The Wild Things play the third game of the series at Windy City tomorrow at 12:05 with pre-game coverage beginning at 11:55 on WJPA 1450 AM. They return home on Tuesday to play a three game series against the Evansville Otters at 7:05. Tuesday is also Kids Eat Free Day presented by ServiceLink. Tickets are available at the box office, on the team Web site or by phone at 866-456-WILD.
