Salem RidgeYaks News Release
Wilmington, DE (June 26, 2010) - An early 2-1 Salem advantage was quickly vanquished as Wilmington scored a dozen times in the first four innings to roll to a 13-5 win in the series rubber match at Frawley Stadium. From the nine spot in the batting order, Blue Rock center fielder Patrick Norris went 4-4 with five RBI to lead the way for Wilmington, while Salem starter Stolmy Pimentel recorded just seven outs in his roughest outing of the year, surrendering nine runs (eight earned) on ten hits in two and a third innings. Pimentel fell to 5-6 on the season and Salem slipped to 1-2 in the second half, 43-30 on the year.
The Rocks and Sox teeter-tottered their way through the first two innings, with Wilmington taking a 1-0 lead in the first, the Red Sox surging ahead 2-1 in the top of the second, and the Blue Rocks bouncing right back to a 3-2 edge after two complete. The third inning began with back-to-back walks for the Red Sox, yet Salem went in order after that against Chris Dwyer in the frame, squandering their last opportunity to close the gap.
In the bottom of the third, the Blue Rocks exploded for six runs, knocking Pimentel out of the game in the process. Ten men batted in the monster frame, in which Wilmington connected on five consecutive RBI base hits. Norris' triple highlighted the inning and Zach Hammes relieved Pimentel and allowed one inherited runner to score before ending the threat.
Up 9-2 after three, the Rocks added three more against Hammes in the fourth to take a ten-run lead. The Blue Rocks managed 17 hits in the ballgame, including 14 singles. Adrian Ortiz finished 3-6 with two RBI, while Rey Navarro went 3-5 with one batted in. Ben Theriot and Juan Rivero also drove in two each for the Blue Rocks.
Down by ten, Salem scratched two across in the fifth and one more in the sixth, yet the Blue Rocks added one more in their half of the sixth and cruised to the 13-5 outcome. Ryan Lavarnway, Tim Federowicz, and Jon Hee led Salem with two hits apiece, while Oscar Tejeda and Drew Hedman contributed two RBI each.
Salem now journeys to Winston-Salem to play three against the Dash, who bettered the Sox by one game in the first half of the season to win the division title. Sunday's 5:00 PM matchup will be the first of 14 second-half meetings between Salem and Winston-Salem. The Red Sox will send Brock Huntzinger to the mound opposite Terry Doyle for the Dash.
