Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

Michael Bowden's best performance of the season was just enough to fuel the Pawtucket Red Sox to a 2-0 victory over the Louisville Bats Tuesday night.

Bowden carried a 1-3 record and a 4.97 ERA entering the night at McCoy Stadium, but he channeled his form from a season ago in which he had a 3.13 ERA over 24 starts for Pawtucket. Bowden, whose career high for innings pitched was eight in 2009 for the PawSox, pitched 7.2 innings and scattered three hits while walking none in his longest outing of the season.

Pawtucket, which has scored just four runs in their last three home victories- winning 2-0, 1-0, and 1-0, scored twice in the third inning for their only runs on the evening. Gustavo Molina walked, Jorge Jimenez singled and Bubba Bell singled to load the bases with no outs. The next batter, Niuman Romero, chopped a ball back to the mound which Louisville starter Travis Wood fielded and threw to home to record the first out. The throw by catcher Wilkin Castillo to first base to attempt to complete the double play glanced off Romero's left shoulder. The ball caromed toward right field scoring Jimenez from second base for a 1-0 lead.

With one out, Tug Hulett hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Bell for the second run of the inning, and the only other run the PawSox would score.

Robert Manuel entered in relief of Bowden in the eighth inning to record his eighth save of the season in eight chances. By pitching 1.1 scoreless innings, Manuel has extended his scoreless inning streak to 17.0 consecutive innings without allowing a run.

For Louiville, Wood pitched seven innings, allowing two runs- one earned-, on four hits and one walk. Wood struck out ten PawSox, one shy of his season-high.

The PawSox will have Wednesday night off before resuming play Thursday night against the Columbus Clippers at McCoy Stadium. Rendor Bierd (2-4, 6.68 ERA) will be the starting pitcher for Pawtucket, facing off against Yohan Pino (5-2, 2.95 ERA) for the Clippers. The first pitch will be at 7:05.
