Fort Mill, S.C. - In the series finale at Knights Stadium the Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Syracuse Chiefs, notched a come from behind 5-4 victory over the Charlotte Knights on Tuesday night. Kevin Mench and Chase Lambin each hit home runs for Syracuse in their series winning victory.
Charlotte (29-38) broke into the scoring column first against Syracuse starter Jeff Mandel. Buck Coats led off the third inning with a double to right field and moved to third after Jeff Kroeger was hit by a pitch and Tyler Flowers walked. With the bases loaded, first base umpire Damian Beal called a balk on Mandel and that allowed Coats to score. That gave the Knights a 1-0 lead.
The Knights would score again in the fourth on a Jordan Danks solo home run to lead off the inning. It was Danks' first and only hit of the series and it pushed the advantage to 2-0 Charlotte.
Syracuse would get on the board in the fifth when Boomer Whiting scored on a wild pitch thrown by Knights starter Carlos Torres. But the Knights would answer right back in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run home run from Dayan Vicideo, his second of the series.
Syracuse scored twice more in the sixth on a two run base hit by Jamie Burke and trailed by just one at 4-3. In the seventh, Kevin Mench hit a two-run home run to tie the game, and in the eighth Chase Lambin hit the first pitch he saw over the fence to give the Cheifs their final 5-4 advantage.
Mike MacDougal earned the win in relief for Syracuse and improved to 2-0. The loss went to Clevelan Santeliz who is now 0-3. Joel Peralta closed out the game with a perfect ninth inning to earn his 19th save of the year.
Syracuse has the day off on Wednesday and will travel further south to Lawrenceville, GA for a series with the Gwinnett Braves. That will begin on Thursday and will feature five and a half games over four days. On Thursday at 6:05, the two teams will finish a suspended game from May 8th and then play their second game following the completion of the first. The next day will have a doubleheader to play the game that was postponed on May 9th and the regularly scheduled ballgame. First pitches for Saturday and Sunday are scheduled for 7:05.
