Frederick, MD - Jon Hee and Tim Federowicz each belted a two-run homer and Salem romped a sloppy Frederick squad 8-1 on Saturday night at Harry Grove Stadium. The Red Sox loaded the bases three times in the first six innings and could have won by many more if not for 13 runners left on base, but Brock Huntzinger and Cesar Cabral performed admirably on the mound to ensure that Salem's eight-run output would easily suffice. Huntzinger allowed one run on six hits over six and a third superb innings, while Cabral struck out five over two and a two-thirds hitless, scoreless frames to close it out. Huntzinger improved to 6-3, becoming the fourth Carolina League pitcher to win a half dozen games this season. Cabral picked up his first Carolina League save in his third outing with Salem.
With the victory, the Red Sox kept pace with the Winston-Salem Dash, who garnered a 2-1 walk-off win over Wilmington. Salem remains three games behind the Dash with seven contests remaining in the first half. Meanwhile, despite the Keys' uncharacteristically poor effort, Frederick clinched the outright Division title in the Northern Division thanks to Wilmington's loss.
Salem loaded the bases with nobody out in the first inning, but only managed one run on Will Middlebrooks' sacrifice fly. After Huntzinger dispatched of Frederick's first three batters in a hurry in the last of the first, the Sox added to their lead on Hee's second-inning dinger, a two-run bomb to straight-away center field. The homer was the first of the season for Hee, who cracked three round trippers in 2009 for the Salem Sox.
The Keys scored their only run in the third on a two-out RBI single from Kyle Hudson, who finished 2-3. Salem quickly answered with another in the fourth, scoring one on Mitch Dening's second double of the game. Salem made it 5-1 in the sixth on Oscar Tejeda's RBI double, then plated three more in the eighth, utilizing Jorge Padron's RBI single and another two-run dinger from Federowicz.
Dening, Padron, Federowicz, and Hee each finished with two hits, while Tejeda went 1-5 to extend his hitting streak to ten games. Peter Hissey and Ryan Dent were the only Red Sox without hits, but Hissey walked twice and Dent drew three base on balls and scored two runs.
The Red Sox conclude their four-game series with Frederick on Sunday evening at 6 PM. Fabian Williamson gets the start for the Red Sox opposite Ryan Berry for the Keys.
