Carolina Mudcats News Release

Chattanooga, TN --- The Chattanooga Lookouts scored a pair of unearned runs in the fourth inning on their way to a 3-0 victory over the Carolina Mudcats at AT&T Field on Monday night.

Tim Sexton (W, 3-5) fanned 10 over six innings, but benefited from two breaks in the fourth to earn the victory. With the game scoreless entering the bottom of the fourth, Carolina starter Scott Carroll hit Corey Smith to being the inning. Ramon Nivar, in his first game back from Triple-A, hit a bad-hop single over Jake Kahaulelio at second base. Without the bad bounce, the Mudcats would likely have gotten a force out at second. Instead, Denis Phipps kicked Nivar's single for an error, putting Smith at third and Nivar at second. Scott Van Slyke then lifted a shallow popfly to centerfield, which was caught by Dave Sappelt. Smith bluffed toward home, but stopped midway home. Sappelt's throw was cutoff behind the mound by Eric Eymann, who then threw to third base, trapping Smith in a rundown. But with the sun setting behind the left field wall, Eymann's throw toward catcher Devin Mesoraco was lost in the sun, flying to the bac kstop to score Smith, with Nivar advancing to third. A grounder scored Nivar to give the Lookouts a 2-0 lead.

Carroll (L, 1-2) would only permit four hits over his seven-inning start, walking four and fanning two.

Sexton would give way to David Pfiefer, who pitched two perfect innings before Kenley Jansen (S, 2) notched the shaky save. Jansen walked consecutive hitters with one out, but then struck out Mesoraco before retiring Phipps on a looper to left-center, which was caught on a dive by Trayvon Robinson.

Carolina had four hits in the game, two by Kahaulelio, who was celebrating his 25th birthday.

The Mudcats (25-33) fell back into last place in the Northern Division with the defeat and are now 2-6 on their 10-game road trip with two to play. Chattanooga (25-32) pushed into fourth place with its third straight win over the Mudcats, Carolina's fourth consecutive loss.

Tom Cochran starts the series' fourth game Tuesday night at 7:15 PM ET against Chris Withrow.
