Mobile BayBears News Release
MOBILE, Ala. - Plenty of opportunities for the BayBears on Monday night at Hank Aaron Stadium, but they leave 11 men on base in a 5-1 loss to the Birmingham Barons, dropping their second in three tries at home.
Birmingham (20-37) grabbed the first-inning advantage against Bryan Shaw (1-6) with Miguel Negron singling to start the contest and moving to third on a double by Fernando Cortez. Shaw nearly worked out of the inning thanks to a line-drive double play off C.J. Retherford's bat, but Jim Gallagher doubled with two outs to knock home Negron.
Shaw worked around three walks over the next two innings to keep it 1-0 before uncorking a one-out solo home run to Retherford in the fifth which put the BayBears (29-27) in a 2-0 hole that they nearly climbed out of in the bottom of the fifth.
Cyle Hankerd reached first on an error by Cortez at third and came home after three straight singles with Collin Cowgill earning the ribbie against starter Matt Long (4-4). Long buckled down from there, however, as he coaxed Evan Frey and Kory Casto to pop out over the infield with the bases loaded before Konrad Schmidt ended the threat with a fielder's choice groundout.
That's as close as the BayBears would get with Birmingham scoring three unearned tallies in the sixth. Salvador Sanchez led off with a single and moved to second on a botched grounder by Jake Elmore. Greg Paiml attempted a sac bunt and almost failed if it weren't for a wild throw to third by Shaw which scored Sanchez.
Negron introduced Tyler Kuhn to home plate with a groundout to second. Cortez lined a single to center, guiding Paiml to the dish to close out the scoring. Both bullpens were solid as the BayBears received three hitless innings from Kyler Newby and Abe Woody.
Anthony Carter (S, 6) fanned five of the six hitters he faced after replacing Henry Mabee with two outs and nobody on base in the eighth.
