Chattanooga Lookouts News Release

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Lookouts starting pitcher Tim Sexton combined with relief pitchers David Pfeiffer and Kenley Jansen to shut out the Mudcats in a 3-0 finish at AT&T Field on Monday night.

Sexton and his counterpart, Scott Carroll, stifled their opponent's bats through the first three innings; however, the Lookouts would finally break the ice in the bottom of the fourth by plating two runs.

Corey Smith led off the rally with a hit by pitch and scampered to third on a sharply hit single from Ramon Nivar, which was bobbled by right fielder Denis Phipps. Scott Van Slyke then hit a fly ball to center field, which evolved into Corey Smith getting caught in a pickle. An errant throw, however, by third baseman Mike Costanzo allowed Smith to cross the plate and Nivar to reach third base. Mike Rivera followed with a ground out to Costanzo, plating Nivar in the process.

This would be the only run support needed for the Lookouts, as Sexton (3-5) put together his finest performance of the season. In six shutout innings, the righty surrendered just four hits. He struck out 10 and did not issue a single walk in the winning performance.

The Lookouts would add an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI single from Robinson. Kenley Jansen shut the door on the Mudcats in the ninth to pick up his second save of the season. Carroll (1-2) was the hard luck loser for Carolina. He yielded two unearned runs, three hits, and four walks, while striking out two in his solid outing.

The Chattanooga Lookouts and Carolina Mudcats will continue their five-game series at 7:15 P.M., tomorrow. Tickets for this game or any other Lookouts home game can be purchased at the Lookouts Box Office at AT&T Field, online at www.lookouts.com, or by calling (423) 267-4849.
