Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - The Drive (29-28) didn't hit their first extra-base hit until the seventh inning, but Ronald Bermudez's double proved to be the catalyst for the Drive offense, which pounded out 15 hits in a 14-4 rout of the Augusta GreenJackets (34-23).
Ten of Greenville's 14 runs came in the final two innings after the eventual game-winning double by Bermudez. He added another double in the eighth, tallying the only extra-base hits of the night for Greenville. He also scored three runs in addition to driving in three.
The double by Bermudez, his third hit of the day, scored Derrik Gibson, who led off the inning with a single and a stolen base. He later scored on an RBI groundout by Reymond Fuentes to give Greenville their sixth run.
Vladimir Frias hit a two-run single later in the inning to end the scoring in the seventh. All four runs scored in the seventh came off of Chris Gloor (2-1), who pitched one and two-thirds innings of relief of starter Chris Heston.
Augusta began the scoring in the second inning when Chris Dominguez hit a solo home run to right field. The GreenJackets threatened to score more, but Ryan Pressly got a timely double play, and the inning ended when Juan Martinez was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double.
The Drive answered right back in the bottom half of the second, when Reynaldo Rodriguez and Fuentes both reached on errors. Frias singled in Rodriguez, and Jeremy Hazelbaker scored both Fuentes and Frias with a single.
Greenville added another run in the third when Bermudez singled, advanced on an error, and later scored on a single by Fuentes.
Jordan Flasher came on in relief of Pressly in the fifth inning, and allowed four runners to reach base before recording an out. RBI singles by Ryan Cavan, Dominguez, and Hector Sanchez tied the score at four.
Flasher settled down in the sixth, allowing just one hit. Anatanaer Batista came on in the seventh and pitched three innings of scoreless relief, earning his second win of the season.
The Drive broke the game open up in the eighth, scoring six runs in the frame and sending 12 batters to the plate. Bermudez began the rally with a two-run double, followed by an RBI single by Reynaldo Rodriguez. Fuentes was hit by a pitch and Zach Gentile walked before Frias reached on an error, scoring Rodriguez from third. Christian Vazquez singled off of the pitcher to drive in the final run.
Martinez, who started the game at shortstop, came in to pitch for the GreenJackets, and handed Hazelbaker his second walk of the inning before striking out Gibson and getting Bermudez to fly out to center.
The Drive will continue their short homestand by sending right-hander Pete Ruiz (4-3, 4.66 ERA) to match up against Jorge Bucardo (4-2, 1.87 ERA) in Sunday's matinee. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05pm at Fluor Field.
Sunday is also "Family FunDay" at the ballpark, in which kids 12 and under get to run the bases following the game. For more information regarding single-game tickets, group outings, and luxury accommodations, visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com or call (864) 240-4500.
