Salem, VA - After losing five straight games, the Salem Sox got back to basics on Friday night with solid pitching and clutch hitting. Thankfully, the fundamentals were just enough as the Sox edged the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 2-1 on Friday night at Lewis-Gale Field. The victory snapped Salem's five-game losing streak and evened the four-game series at one game apiece.

With the game tied at one in the seventh, Jon Hee singled to start the frame and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Dent. The sacrifice was the second of the night for Salem, matching their season total entering the game. After Mitch Dening grounded out to advance Hee to third, Peter Hissey came through with a bloop double to center field to score to the go-ahead run.

Will Latimer and Kyle Fernandes combined to retire the final nine Pelican hitters in order to finish off the game. Overall, it was a great night for the Salem staff of arms, as starter Caleb Clay went six solid innings, allowing an unearned run on four hits while striking out three and walking no one. In 56 innings this season, Clay has totaled 28 strikeouts and only three walks. Latimer earned the victory to improve to 3-3 by striking out two in his two innings on the hill. Fernandes picked up his team leading fifth save, striking out a pair in a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Myrtle Beach scored its lone run of the game in the top of the second on one swing of the bat. With Samuel Sime at the plate with one out, the Pelicans' third baseman doubled to the right-center field wall. Sime rounded second and halted there, but Oscar Tejeda, thinking Sime was headed for third, launched a relay throw missile over third baseman Will Middlebrooks and into the Salem dugout, enabling Sime to advance two bases for Myrtle Beach's only run of the game.

The Sox responded in the third with an unearned run of their own off Randall Delgado. Dening singled with one out and advanced to second on a sac bunt from Hissey. After Ryan Lavarnway walked, Tejeda grounded to the second baseman Dan Nelson, who was unable to handle the grounder, allowing Dening to score from second, tying the game at one.

Salem defeated Delgado for the second time in as many tries this season. Delgado, widely regarded as one of the best pitchers in the Carolina League, picked up the loss to drop to 2-5 on the season, despite striking out eight in six and two-thirds innings on the bump.

The Sox and Pelicans return to Lewis-Gale Field for game three of the four-game set Saturday evening at 6:05. Alex Wilson will get the start for Salem against Myrtle Beach's Julio Teheran. Teheran is considered one of the top pitching prospects in all of minor league baseball. In three Carolina League outings, the Colombian righthander has surrendered just one earned run in 21 innings, with 28 strikeouts and only three walks.
