Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - For the second time this season, Chris Dominguez provided a walkoff home run for his Augusta GreenJackets. The third baseman's second home run of the night sealed a 7-5 win over the Asheville Tourists in 13 innings on Friday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
Dominguez homered for the first time back in the fourth inning and at the time, his first longball tied things at two. His two homers are part of a four-hit night that also includes a double. Dominguez becomes the second GreenJacket this season to hit two home runs in a game - and both instances came against the Asheville Tourists.
With one out in the 11th, Juan Martinez was hit in the foot on an 0-2 pitch from Paul Bargas (1-3). After Ryan Cavan popped out to first, Dominguez sent the fans home happy with his team-best eighth homer of the year.
Asheville scored twice in the third to lead 2-0 but the GreenJackets scratched their way to the lead in the next two innings. Ryan Lollis' RBI single in the third split the gap in half while Dominguez tied things with the home run an inning later. With the bases full later in the third, Lollis' groundout gave Augusta a short-lived lead.
Eliezer Mesa's two-out, fifth inning home run tied the game again at three. Nolan Arenado's second run-scoring hit of the night later in the fifth gave Asheville a lead that they extended with a run an inning later.
In the sixth, the GreenJackets cut the lead down to a run on a Nick Liles RBI single. Hector Sanchez came around third on the Liles hit to try and tie the game, but was thrown out at the plate by right fielder Kent Matthes. The Asheville lead would only remain another inning as Luke Anders tied things at five with a run-scoring hit in the seventh. Augusta felt the wrath of Matthes' arm in the eighth as Asheville's right fielder threw out Daniel Cook at the plate on Juan Martinez's single to preserve the tie.
In the tenth, the GreenJackets loaded the bases, but Martinez grounded out to first on a nice diving stop by Asheville first baseman Jared Clark to send the game deeper into extras. The Tourists had few chances late as Mitch Lively, Devan Kline and Ryan Verdugo kept Asheville off the board with seven scoreless innings of five-hit relief and 13 strikeouts. Verdugo (2-1) struck out five in three scoreless innings to get the win.
The Jackets won in walkoff fashion for the fifth time this season and are now 4-1 in extra innings.
The GreenJackets will look for their third win in a row on Sunday afternoon with Chris Heston (1-2, 7.12) taking the mound against Chris Balcom-Miller (0-1, 1.98). First pitch will come at 2:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 1:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
