Hawks Lose Sixth Straight 3-1
May 15, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Comstock Park, MI - The South Bend Silver Hawks offensive struggles continued Saturday night as they dropped their sixth straight contest 3-1 to the West Michigan Whitecaps at Fifth Third Ballpark. South Bend has scored one run or fewer in four of the six losses during the stretch.
West Michigan starter Trevor Feeney (WP, 4-3) went the distance for his first complete game of the year. Feeney, who leads the Midwest League in innings pitched with 56, allowed only one run while striking out seven. After stranding runners at second and third in the third inning, South Bend didn't have more than one runner on base at a time the rest of the way.
West Michigan scored all the runs it would need in the bottom of the second off South Bend starter Mike Belfiore (LP, 1-3). Avisail Garcia started the scoring with an opposite-field solo homerun, his first of the year. Alexis Espinoza followed with a single and advanced to third on a two-base error by first baseman Bobby Stone, who threw the ball into the outfield while trying to complete a pickoff of Espinoza. Eric Roof then singled to plate Espinoza and put the Whitecaps up for good.
Belfiore pitched 5.0 innings, allowing only the two runs in the second. He struck out two while walking two and allowed five hits. Randy Rodriguez (ND) allowed one run in 3.0 innings of relief for South Bend.
For the 23rd time this season, the Silver Hawks got on the board first with a run in their first at bat. Keon Broxton led off the game with a double and moved to third on a passed ball. Chris Owings' sacrifice fly to right field brought home Broxton to give the Silver Hawks a 1-0. With the loss, however, South Bend fell to 12-11 when scoring first.
West Michigan added an insurance tally in the sixth off South Bend reliever Randy Rodriguez (ND). Jordan Lennerton led off with a double and moved to third on a groundout by Garcia. Espinoza drove home Lennerton with a sacrifice fly to give the Whitecaps a two run cushion.
The Silver Hawks look to avoid the sweep against the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers) Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM. RHP Charles Brewer (2-3, 1.46 ERA) will throw for South Bend while the Tigers' top-rated prospect Jacob Turner (0-0, 3.78 ERA) starts for West Michigan. Pregame coverage begins at 12:40 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
