Biscuits Use Throwing Error to Walkoff in Wild Ninth

Montgomery Biscuits News Release

MONTGOMERY, AL - A throwing error allowed the Biscuits to walk off 5-4 winners after they blew a 3-1 lead in the top of the ninth Sunday afternoon at Riverwalk Stadium.

Trailing 4-3 with two-outs and the bases empty in the bottom half of the ninth, Shawn O'Malley singled to left-center. Then, with a full count and O'Malley on the move at first, Emeel Salem ripped a double to right-center to plate O'Malley and tie the game at 4-4. Cody Strait then hit a hard grounder down the third base line that Taylor Harbin dived to stop with a backhand, but his throw to first sailed over the head of the first baseman and Salem came around third to score the winning run.

None of the bottom of the ninth drama would have been necessary if Matt Gorgen could have nailed down his first save of the season. A Jake Elmore double drove home two runs and gave the BayBears their first lead of the game at 4-3 after the Biscuits had led 3-0.

Overshadowed by the ninth inning-roller coaster was the splendid start of David Newmann, who hurled seven scoreless innings in his double-A debut. Newmann gave way to Gorgen, who allowed one in the eighth on a two-out triple from Ollie Linton then three in the ninth.

The Biscuits got two in the second behind three straight hits to begin the inning. Cody Cipriano doubled and moved to third on a Ryan Royster single. Chris De La Cruz then singled home Cipriano, and an infield single from O'Malley allowed Royster to score with two outs.

Cipriano singled home Strait in the sixth for the other Biscuits run. He finished the day 3-4, as did O'Malley. Three players collected two hits for Mobile.

Gorgen (1-1), despite blowing the lead, picks up the win. Abe Woody (1-1) takes the loss for the BayBears, reversing the decision from Opening Night.

The five-game series' rubber match is Monday night at 7:05 with RHP Jeremy Hall throwing for the Biscuits against RHP Barry Enright for the BayBears.
