Admirals Slay Monsters

Milwaukee, WI--Mike Santorelli scored his team-leading 20th and 21st goals of the year and Mark Dekanich turned aside 29 shots for his 21st win as the Admirals took out the Lake Erie Monsters 5-1 on Wednesday nigh at the Bradley Center. The win was the first time in eight lifetime meetings that the Admirals managed to beat Lake Erie in regulation.
In the final matchup of the season against the Monsters, Santorelli cashed in a rebound with two seconds left of the Ads first power play attempt, giving the Ads a 1-0 at 15:59 of the first Santorelli's goal was set up with Teemu Laakso sliding the puck to Mark Matheson stationed at the point. Matheson ripped a slap shot that Monster goalie John Grahame would stop, but Santorelli was ready with his stick on the ice and knocked the rebound into the back of the net. Matheson and Laakso collected assists on the only goal of the opening period.
Milwaukee went up 2-0 when Ryan Maki snapped a shot under the blocker of Grahame at 6:01 of the second stanza. Dave Scatchard knocked the puck away from a group of players at the dasher over to Maki who was uncontested in the slot to whistle the shot past Grahame. The goal was Maki's fifth of the season with Scatchard and Chris Mueller receiving assists on the eventual game winning goal.
Admirals goalie Mark Dekanich played a key role in the second period turning away all of Lake Erie's twelve shots in the period. The Monsters fast attacking offense included multiple odd men rushes that left Dekanich sprawled out across the net, but all would be turned away by the eventual second star.
Mike Santorelli tallied his second power play goal at 16:53 of the second with a wrist a shot that would make it through the traffic to the twine of the north goal at the rink. Once again the Ads power play moved the puck to the open Santorelli who made the most of the opportunity. Robert Dietrich and Jonathon Blum were given helpers on Santorelli's team leading 21st goal of the season.
Only two minutes would expire before the Ads would strike again pushing the score to 4-0 at 18:53. Nick Spaling rushed down the sideboard and fired a centering pass that went off of a Lake Erie defenseman and into the net for his sixth goal of the season.
Ben Guite rudely welcomed Monster replacement goalie Billy Sauer to the third period scoring after just twelve seconds elapsed off the clock and increasing the lead to 5-0. Guite finished off the work that Triston Grant and Hugh Jessiman initiated shortly after the puck dropping in third. Grant carried the puck into the offensive zone and shot puck at Sauer, the puck spit out to Jessiman who shot from close range twice before Guite successfully pushed it past the goal line.
The lone goal the Monsters would score was shorthanded at 11:28 of the final period, when Justin Mercier broke away from the Ads defense and backhanded the puck past Dekanich. The goal was unassisted to break Dekanich's shutout hopes.
The Admirals are back home on Saturday, March 13 when they host the Toronto Marlies at 7:30 pm, followed by a post-game concert by classic rock legends Foreigner.
