March 10, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL) - Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - Left wing Josh Hennessy potted two goals and recorded an assist as the Binghamton Senators defeated the Manchester Monarchs by a score of 5-3 at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Wednesday night.
Manchester (34-23-3-5) remains in third place in the Atlantic Division with 76 points. Binghamton (26-30-5-3) is in seventh place in the East Division with 60 points.
"I was disappointed with our start and the errors we continued to make that created the slow start," said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris. "We continue to address these mistakes and we have yet to find a way to play consistently throughout the entire game."
Hennessy would score his second tally of the game at 13:47 of the second period to extend the Senators lead to 4-1. Center Zack Smith, initiating play in the neutral zone, skated up the left wing with Hennessy entering the zone. Smith quickly dished the puck over to Hennessy who fired a slap shot past Bernier to extend the Senators lead to 4-1. Smith assisted on the shorthanded tally.
The Senators scored the first goal of the game at 3:19 of the first period as left wing Denis Hamel scored his 20th goal of the season. Entrenched in the Monarchs defensive zone and possessing the man advantage, right wing Jonathan Cheechoo held the puck along the left wing boards. A quick pass by Cheechoo was collected by Smith who skated to the near post, faked a shot and passed the puck across the crease to Hamel. A simple wrist shot by Hamel beat Monarchs netminder Jonathan Bernier over his glove. The goal gave the Senators the early 1-0 advantage.
At the 2:50 mark of the second period, Binghamton right wing Jason Bailey scored his third goal of the season to extend the Senators advantage to two goals. Forward sent a pass up the ice to center Jim O'Brien who skated into the zone. O'Brien put a spin move on the Monarchs defender, moving him out of position. A quick shot following the spin move was kicked aside by Bernier, but the rebound was collected by Bailey and fired past the lunging netminder for the score.
The Senators would strike again only 1:57 later as Hennessy scored his 23rd goal of the season at 4:47 of the second period. From the defensive zone, Senators blueliner Craig Schira passed the puck up to his defensive partner Geoff Kinrade. Spotting Hennessy at the Monarchs blueline, Kinrade sent a feed up to winger. The Senators left wing would side-step a Monarchs defenseman along the boards and skated past the right post. Hennessy slid a feed into the crease and trickled it past Bernier to triple up the Monarchs, 3-0.
Manchester left wing Bud Holloway scored his 17th goal of the season at 11:33 of the middle frame to put the Monarchs on the scoreboard. Holloway, collecting the puck after a Senators turnover, skated toward the center red line and fired a shot on Senators netminder Chris Holt. The puck bounced through Holt's legs and the Monarchs scored their first goal of the game.
Monarchs defenseman David Kolomatis scored his sixth goal of the season at 17:40 of the second period. Defenseman Andrew Campbell flipped a puck into the Senators zone and center Justin Azevedo chased it down. Azevedo collected the puck after laying a hit on a Binghamton skater in the corner. Falling down after the hit, he managed to send the puck past the net and to the hash marks where Kolomatis was skating up from the point. Kolomatis, in mind wind-up while receiving the puck, fired it past Holt to bring the Monarchs within two goals.
Senators right wing Ryan Keller scored his 27th goal of the season with 48 seconds left in the second period. Defenseman Geoff Kinrade, playing the puck in the defensive zone, sent the puck up the ice to Hennessy who was streaking up the left wing. Hennessy entered the zone with Keller and quickly fed him the puck while skating down the left wing boards. Keller put a deke move on a Monarchs defenseman near the face-off circles and skate toward the near post. Keller put a deke on Bernier, shifting him to the right. This shift allowed Keller to dangle the puck around his left pad and into the right corner to put Binghamton up 5-2 after two periods.
Bernier (26-18-5) saw 39 minutes and 42 seconds in net through two periods and drew the loss, stopping 23-of-28 shots on goal. Holt (12-12-1) earned his 12th victory of the season, stopping 27-of-30 shots. Monarchs goaltender Jeff Zatkoff replaced Bernier for the third period and stopped all 15 shots on net.
Manchester went 0-for-5 on the power play. Binghamton was 2-for-8 with the man advantage.
