Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Portland Winterhawks fired 53 shots at Tri-City Americans netminder Alexander Pechurskiy at the Rose Garden Tuesday night, but he turned away 52 of those shots as the Winterhawks dropped a 5-1 decision to the Americans.

It was Portland who opened the scoring on a power play goal with 47 seconds remaining in the first period. Ryan Johansen sent a cross-ice pass to Taylor Aronson at the right faceoff circle, who then fed Nino Niederreiter, who was alone in the slot after he slipped past the Americans' defense. Niederreiter fired a shot through the legs of Pechurskiy to make it 1-0 going into the second period. The Winterhawks outshot the Americans 18-9 in the frame.

But Tri-Cities then came out and scored three quick goals in the first 2:46 of the second period as Justin Feser, Brooks Macek on a power play and Jordan Messier gave them a 3-1 lead. Portland continued attacking, firing 20 shots at the Americans in the period, but Pechurskiy turned them away each time, keeping the Americans' 3-1 lead intact going into the third period.

Tri-Cities scored 3:16 into the third when Macek got his second of the night on a high shot from the right faceoff circle, then capped the scoring at the 10:19 mark on a goal by Neal Prokop to finish with the 5-1 victory.

In all, Pechurskiy stopped 52 of the 53 shots he faced, as the Winterhawks took 18 shots in the first period, 20 in the second and 15 in the third.

The Winterhawks will return to the ice Friday night when they host the Spokane Chiefs at 7:30 at the Rose Garden. The game can be heard live on Freedom 970.
