Elmira Jackals News Release
The Elmira Jackals used two late goals to take down the Reading Royals 3-2 on Saturday night at First Arena in Elmira N.Y. The victory gave the Jackals a nine-point lead in the American East Division over the Royals, and the crowd of 4,072 was the Jackals' league-leading 12th sellout of the season.
The Jackals had to work from behind early on, when Bryan Ewing poked in a rebound on the power play off a Ryan Cruthers shot at 11:03 of the first period to give the Royals the 1-0 advantage.
Maxime Gratchev tied the game for the Jackals at 2:18 of the second period, when his shot from the right circle went through the pads of Royals goaltender Matt Dalton to make it 1-1.
The game stayed deadlocked through the remainder of the period, as Dalton made a great kick save on a Chris Korchinski chance on the doorstep with the Jackals short handed late in the second.
The two teams stayed tied until 16:57 of the third period, when Tyler Donati gave the Jackals their first lead of the game with a backhand from the slot for his league-leading 81st point of the season. Justin Donati and Mat Robinson had the assists on the go-ahead goal.
Chris Korchinski scored on the power play with 1:11 left, shooting a puck from the near goal line that deflected into the net off Dalton to make it 3-1 Jackals.
With the Royals net empty, Marc Cavosie redirected an Aaron Brocklehurst shot with 6.4 seconds left to make it a 3-2 score in favor of the Jackals. Off the ensuing faceoff, Ewing had a good chance from the right circle, but Jackals goaltender Andy Chiodo made his 27th and final save of the game to preserve the lead as time ran out.
The Jackals win was their third straight against the Royals and second of the weekend, having defeated Reading 8-3 on Friday night.
Chiodo improved to 4-0-0-0 with the Jackals, while Dalton fell to 16-18-0-2 with the Royals, stopping 35 of 38 shots.
The Jackals upped their record to 29-18-3-2, while the Royals fell to 25-23-1-3 in 2009-2010.
Elmira hosts Johnstown on Sunday at First Arena at 4:05 p.m. After the game, fans are invited to stick around and skate with the Jackals. For tickets, call (607) 734-PUCK (7825), visit the First Arena Box Office, or click here.
