Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
West Valley City, UT - In a Friday night contest, the Victoria Salmon Kings and Utah Grizzlies met in the second of a three-game set at the E Center in West Valley City, Utah. Victoria gave Glenn Fisher the start in net, while Utah started Beau Erickson.
Victoria dressed only four defenseman for the tilt, and the Grizzlies opened the scoring at 16:58 to give the home side a 1-0 edge. Vladimir Nikiforov drove hard to the net on an offensive rush with Fisher turning his offer aside. The puck rebounded off the Salmon Kings' netminder to an open James Sixsmith at the left side of the net who buried his 13th marker of the season. Randall Gelech responded for the Salmon Kings with 43 seconds remaining in the period when he wired a hard slap shot from the top of the left faceoff circle that beat Erickson glove-side. The teams skated into the locker rooms with a 1-1 tie after the opening frame.
Adam Taylor gave the visitors a 2-1 lead just 5:09 into the second period when he kept the puck on a two-on-one rush alongside Salmon Kings' newcomer Bryan Leitch and fired a wrist shot past the Utah netminder for his 10th goal of the campaign. Sixsmith skated behind the Kings' net and fired a pass to AJ Perry who was posed at the top of the crease and he fired it home to pull the Grizzlies even with just eight seconds remaining in the frame. It was Perry's 20th goal of the year to send the game into the third period deadlocked at 2-2.
In the third period, Taylor gave the Salmon Kings a 3-2 advantage when he was the recipient of a nice bank-pass off the boards from Andy Brandt. The feed sent Taylor in all alone and he made no mistake in beating Erickson between the pads. The Victoria forward completed his hat trick at 7:34 of the third period when he poked through a lose puck from under Erickson at the right side of the crease and into the net. Taylor's 4-2 goal was his 11th of the season. Chad Painchaud sealed the victory for the Salmon Kings with an empty-net tally, his 23rd marker of the year, at 19:28. Salmon Kings 5 Utah 2.
Victoria went 0/30.0% on the power play while Utah was 0/40.0%. The Salmon Kings outshot the Grizzlies 40-35.
The Salmon Kings conclude their three-game set against the Grizzlies tomorrow night at 6:05 p.m. PST before heading to Bakersfield next week for a two-game set versus the Condors. Victoria returns home to host the National Conference leading Idaho Steelheads for a three-game set with matches on Wednesday, March 10th, Friday, March 12th, and Saturday, March 13th.
