Florida Everblades News Release
Estero, Fla - Everblade blood was shed yet Florida still claimed victory in their second straight shoot-out 4-3 versus Kalamazoo Saturday night at Germain Arena. In front of a sold-out crowd supporting the second annual Pink in the Rink breast cancer awareness night, the Everblades notched three straight goals in a shoot-out thanks to center Colin Nicholson, rookie right wing Shea Guthrie and right wing Dominic Osman.
The Everblades edged the Kalamazoo Wings late in the first period, with a goal at 12:46 by defenseman Elgin Reid. Reid slid past Wings goalie Ryan Nie, shooting the puck into the net in passing and tumbling over Kalamazoo's defense at the sound of the goal buzzer. Rookie defenseman Scott Hotham and goaltender Chris Beckford-Tseu were credited with assists. The remaining minute of the period saw a controversial shot by Florida defender Phil Paquet, but was decided no goal by officials. Florida kept the lead for the remainder of the period, 1-0.
After a physically rough half, Florida notched their second tally late in the period when right wing Milan Gajic, with an assist by Baker, shot the puck in Kalamazoo's net from the border of Nie's crease. Kalamazoo left wing Patrick Asselin answered 11 seconds later with a goal assisted by left wing Brian McGuirk, closing the gap 2-1. The stanza concluded with Florida's shots on goal edging the Wings 25-21.
Kalamazoo evened the board 2-2 at 6:36 of the third period when a puck knocked in by forward Trent Daavettila bounced past Florida's Beckford-Tseu. Daavettila's 15th goal of the season was assisted by center Mathieu Curadeau and defenseman Louis Liotti. The Wings offense slipped past the âBlades' defense with another tally at 15:21 by left wing Patrick Asselin pushing the score to 3-2. Asselin's goal was assisted by McGuirk and center Rick Cleaver. With two minutes remaining, Florida returned fire with a power-play goal at 17:47 by 2009 ECHL MVP Kevin Baker. Baker's 9th goal of the season was assisted by Gajic and left wing Mathieu Roy. Regulation play ended tied 3-3 for the second game straight.
Overtime proved scoreless for both the Everblades and Wings, prompting a shoot-out between Florida goaltender Chris Beckford-Tseu and Kalamazoo's Ryan Nie.
Kalamazoo's Cleaver notched the lone shoot-out tally for the Wings, while Florida responded with three straight by center Colin Nicholson, rookie right wing Shea Guthrie and right wing Dominic Osman. The Everblades claimed a 4-3 win, recording two wins out of three games versus Kalamazoo.
