Mavericks Trade Defenseman Tyler Fleck To Tulsa

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - Missouri Mavericks' President and General Manager Brent Thiessen today announced the Central Hockey League (CHL) club has traded defenseman Tyler Fleck to the Tulsa Oilers for defenseman Tom Maldonado and future considerations.

"It's tough to lose a player like Tyler Fleck, and you don't replace him," said Thiessen. "However, we are excited about Tom and getting him into the lineup right away. We wish Tyler the best."

Fleck, 30 (1/29/79), captained the Mavericks and played in 20 games this season with three points (1-2=3) and 32 penalty minutes. The 5-foot-10, 210-pound defenseman is in his 11th professional season, and played the previous 10 seasons with the Oklahoma City Blazers. Due to personal reasons, Fleck needed to be closer to his home in Oklahoma City, and Tulsa was the best fit.

"We are in the business of winning hockey games," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "The toughest part of the business is we deal with great human beings in the locker room. It is with great respect to Tyler Fleck, who was hand-chosen as our captain, that we move him to Tulsa. Tulsa is the closest city to his permanent residence of Oklahoma City, so he can be closer to his family. We wish Tyler the very best as he looks to continue his career."

The Mavericks acquired second-year defenseman Tom Maldonado and future considerations from Tulsa. Maldonado, 24 (2/24/85), hails from the Bronx, New York and had nine points (3-6=9) in 23 games with Tulsa before being traded. The 5-foot-8, 185-pound defenseman split his rookie season between Germany and CHL New Mexico. He had 15 points (3-12=15) in 34 games with New Mexico. Prior to turning pro, Maldonado played four seasons at Middlebury College in Vermont. He finished his collegiate career with 118 games played and 105 points (23-82=105).

"In this deal, we are going to receive two very good hockey players that will allow us to continue to improve our team," added Hillman. "Our first of two selections is Tom Maldonado who is a very good skating defenseman with great vision for the ice. We have struggled to score goals and Tom makes a good first pass, and he can jump up into the play to give us more offensive opportunities."

In order to complete the trade, the rights of a player to be named after the season will be traded to the Mavericks.

Missouri's next home game is Tuesday, December 22 against the Laredo Bucks at 7:05 p.m. at Independence Events Center. It is a Price Chopper "Two-for-Tuesday" game in which fans can purchase one terrace or club level ticket and get one free.
