TAMPA BAY, Fla. - The Tampa Bay Lightning, NHL parent club of the Norfolk Admirals, have recalled defenseman Mike Lundin from the Admirals. The Lightning also recalled defenseman Matt Smaby from the Admirals following the conclusion of his conditioning stint. Both announcements were made today by Lightning Executive Vice President and General Manager Brian Lawton.
Lundin, a 6-foot-2, 197-pound defenseman from Burnsville, Minnesota, led all defensemen and ranked fifth overall with Norfolk in scoring with 11 points on two goals and nine assists. He had appeared in all 20 games for Norfolk this season. Lundin also was tied for 13th in the American Hockey League in scoring among defensemen. Lundin, who also led the Admirals in scoring by defensemen last season, has appeared in 71 career AHL games (all with Norfolk) and has six goals and 36 assists in those games.
The 25-year-old third-year pro has appeared in 106 career NHL games (all with the Lightning) with eight assists. In 2007-08, he appeared in 81 of Tampa Bay's 82 games and ranked second on the Lightning in plus/minus rating with a plus-3. He also represented the Eastern Conference in the 2008 NHL YoungStars Game.
Lundin played in 160 career games with the Maine Black Bears from 2003-07, recording 13 goals and 69 points. He was drafted by the Lightning in the fourth round (102nd overall) at the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
Smaby, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound native of Minneapolis, Minnesota, appeared in two games with the Admirals following his assignment to the Admirals on a conditioning stint last Monday. He has appeared in five total games with Norfolk this season and is scoreless with two penalty minutes. Smaby has not appeared in a game for the Lightning so far this season.
Smaby split last season between the Admirals and Lightning. He appeared in 25 games with Norfolk, recording two goals, four assists and 30 penalty minutes. In a career-high 43 NHL games with the Lightning last season, Smaby posted his first four NHL points with four assists and added 50 penalty minutes. His 19:05 average ice time was also the highest of his career and was fourth among NHL rookie defensemen with 20 or more games played.
Smaby has appeared in 57 career NHL games (all with the Lightning) with four assists and 62 penalty minutes. He has also appeared in 154 career AHL games between the Admirals and Springfield Falcons, recording five goals and 23 assists with 141 penalty minutes.
Selected in the second round, 41st overall by the Lightning at the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Smaby played three seasons for the University of North Dakota (2003-04 through 2005-06), captaining teams that reached the NCAA Frozen Four in consecutive seasons.
