Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Separated by just a single point in the East Division standings, the B-Sens and the Albany River Rats faced off at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. By the end of the night, two goals each from Ryan Keller and Josh Hennessy pushed the B-Sens to a 4-1 victory, and a second place divisional tie with the Norfolk Admirals.
Binghamton bombarded River Rats goaltender Mike Murphy with fifty shots, while Binghamton's Andy Chiodo stopped all but one of the 26 shots that came his way.
The B-Sens struck first off a deflection by Ryan Keller. For the second time in two nights, Keller tipped a shot from the point off a faceoff that took a wicked bounce and found the top right corner of the net 12:34 into the first.
Less than a minute later it was Keller again, this time burying a shot at the far post. Captain Denis Hamel took a shot from the slot that was turned aside by Murphy that landed on the stick of Martin St. Pierre who fired a hard pass to a wide-open Keller.
The River Rats pulled within one midway through the second period on the power play. In an attempt to clear the front of the net, Derek Smith checked an Albany forward into Chiodo, sending the Senators goaltender flying into the back of the net, losing his stick and his glove. Albany's Jay Harrison slid the loose puck to the point, where defenseman Jamie McBain took a slap shot towards the net. A half-equipped Chiodo made a fantastic effort by sliding back into position with closed pads, but the puck trickled through his five-hole and over the goal line.
It wasn't long until the Sens regained their two-goal lead on a power play of their own. Craig Schira brought the puck in along the right boards and threw a centering pass to Kaspars Daugavins in the slot. Daugavins' stick was tied up by an Albany defenseman, but he still managed to redirect the puck with his skate over to Josh Hennessy, who banged home the goal at 13:57 to give the B-Sens a 3-1 lead.
Hennessy's second goal came on the power play once again 12:39 into the third period. Passes between the Senators' power play unit caught three Albany defenders up high, giving Hennessy room to stickhandle down low. The lone Albany defender let Hennessy walk in and, with the puck seemingly on a string, Hennessy deked Murphy out of position and buried a backhander to insure his team their third win at home.
Chiodo's fast glove and several acrobatic saves helped insure the Sens a victory, as well as the game's third star honors. Ryan Keller and Josh Hennessy received first and second star honors, respectively.
The B-Sens next game comes on Thanksgiving night, Nov. 26 at 6 p.m., back home at the Arena against the Adirondack Phantoms. Tickets are $17.75 for side seating, $16.75 for end seating. Fans can purchase tickets at www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 1-800-745-3000 or in person at the Binghamton Senators' executive office or the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena box office.
