Condors Open Six-Game Homestand Wednesday

November 16, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors compiled a 2-1-0 record last week and now return to home ice to open a season-long six-game homestand on Wednesday. Four of those six games will come this week, including a three-game series against Alaska.

The Condors are 8-6-0 with 16 points in the standings, and remain in first place in the Pacific Division. The Condors have been atop their division from the start of the season, the longest length of time since 2004-05, when they jumped out to a 13-1-2 start.

THIS WEEK (ALL TIMES PACIFIC):

Wednesday, Nov. 18 vs. Ontario (10:30 a.m.)

Friday, Nov. 20 vs. Alaska (7 p.m.)

Saturday, Nov. 21 vs. Alaska (7 p.m.)

Sunday, Nov. 22 vs. Alaska (5 p.m.)

WEEK IN REVIEW (Home team in CAPS):

Tuesday, Nov. 10

CONDORS 3 vs. Stockton 2

Attendance: 4,948

Condors Captain LW Shawn Weller had a goal and an assist to lead the Condors to a 3-2 victory over the Stockton Thunder in the first regular season meeting of the season between the division rivals. Defensemen John de Gray and Sasha Pokulok both scored as well for Bakersfield, who trailed Stockton 1-0 after the first frame, but outshot the Thunder 29-10 over the final two periods.

Friday, Nov. 13

Condors 3 vs. ALASKA 2, OT

Newly signed, and former Alaska Ace, F Gino Guyer set up a goal and scored the overtime game-winner for a 3-2 victory on the road in Alaska Friday night. D John de Gray scored for the second straight game and LW Kyle Calder also tallied for Bakersfield, while G Justin Pogge made 29 saves for the victory.

Saturday, Nov. 14

ALASKA 7 vs. Condors 1

The Aces exacted revenge on Saturday, exploding for six first period tallies en route to a 7-1 win to earn a split of the two-game series. Rookie F Nick Kemp scored the first goal of his professional career for the Condors, who outshot the Aces 37-35 in the game.

PLAYER AND TEAM NOTES:

D John de Gray joined D Sasha Pokulok among the ECHL's defensemen goal-scoring leaders. Pokulok is tied for 1st with six goals, and de Gray is tied for 3rd with five. De Gray scored in back-to-back games last week. Bakersfield had two penalty shots on Saturday, from C Adam Naglich and LW Logan MacMillan (right), though failed to score on either. It was the first time the Condors have ever had two penalty shots in one game. Bakersfield has faced two penalty shots in a game only once, also against Alaska, on Dec. 7, 2007. Neither shooter scored that night either, although the two penalty shots came against different Condors goaltenders (Jamie Hodson and Yutaka Fukufuji). LW Kyle Calder became the second player recalled directly from the Condors to Anaheim this season, when he got the call from Alaska on Saturday. G Justin Pogge has been promoted straight to the NHL twice this season. After shutting down the opposing power play in four of the last six games (28 of 30), the Condors have climbed to 4th in the ECHL at 86.5% on the penalty kill. Bakersfield has surrendered just 5 power play goals in the last nine games, killing off 45 of 50 opportunities (90%). Friday's game was the first overtime game of the season for the Condors, coming in the team's 13th game. It's the longest any Condors team has gone to start a season without an overtime or shootout game.

ON THE DOCKET:

The Condors busy week commences on Wednesday when they host the Ontario Reign at 10:30 a.m. for the annual Businessperson's Special/Field Trip Day Game. Tickets for this game are just $10 for any seat in the house.

The Alaska Aces come to town for a three-in-three this weekend, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday night the first 3,000 fans will get Team Trading Card Set #1, sponsored by the Bakersfield Californian. The strip of six cards is a part of a five-night collector's series scheduled this season. The next night in the series is Nov. 27.

On Saturday, everyone at the game will get a Condors Rivalry Poster, sponsored by Fox Sports Radio 970. The posters feature images of several Condors players along with some of Condorstown's biggest rivals. On Sunday, Bright House Networks presents Cosmo & Wanda from Nickelodeon's The Fairly OddParents, who will be at the game posing for pics in the Condors Photo Booth and hanging out with fans throughout the night. Also, bring your skates to the game and hit the ice for a free skate with the Condors immediately following the contest against the Aces. Limited skate rental is also available for $3.
