San Antonio Rampage News Release
AUSTIN (September 27, 2009) - The San Antonio Rampage finished the preseason with a 4-3 win over the AHL's newest team, the Texas Stars, at Cedar Park Center Sunday afternoon.
Just over four minutes after the first puck drop in the Stars new arena, the Rampage were first to light up the scoreboard with a Texas turnover behind the Stars net that shot out in front of the crease where Rampage center Chad Kolarik was waiting to tap it in past Texas netminder Brent Krahn.
The Rampage reciprocated with a turnover in the Stars zone that allowed former Rampage forward Matt Beaudoin to walk the puck up the right boards. Beaudoin found Perttu Lindgren on the opposite side who snuck the puck in past Rampage goaltender Al Montoya five-hole to tie the score 1-1 at the 13:46 mark.
With 3:22 remaining in the opening period, a pass from Rampage Captain Joel Perrault at the left circle to Kyle Turris, who was stationed at the right post, gave the Rampage a 2-1 advantage before both teams headed to the locker room for the first intermission. Colin Long was credited with the second assist on the Rampage's first power-play goal of the preseason.
The Rampage extended their lead with a Dan Sexton goal 6:20 into the second period. Kolarik passed the puck from behind the Stars net to Sexton who shot the puck over Krahn's head and found the net right behind the crossbar for a Rampage 3-1 advantage.
Texas responded with back-to-back goals 40 seconds apart to tie the score 3-3. Tyler Shelast recorded the Stars third goal with the man-advantage when Ivan Vishnevskiy punched the puck through four black jerseys to find Shelast at the 8:51 mark. Travis Morin posted his second goal of the preseason against the Rampage 40 seconds later with help from Michael Neal and Colton Sceviour.
The Rampage took over the lead for the third time with less than three minutes left in the middle frame as defenseman Jeff May blasted a shot from the blue line past Krahn for a 4-3 edge heading into the final session. Perrault and Justin Bernhardt were credited with the assists on May's goal which proved to be the game winner.
Both teams showed their grit with 40 accumulated minutes of fighting majors as five fights broke out.
The Rampage finished their preseason schedule with a 1-2 record. They kicked off the preseason last Thursday when they lost to the Stars 2-1 at Northwoods Ice Center. On Saturday the team traveled to Houston and the Rampage battled it out in a six-round shootout that ended with an Aeros win 3-2 at Sugarland Ice and Sports Center.
