September 15, 2009 - Major League Soccer (MLS) - Sporting Kansas City News Release
The Kansas City Wizards announced Tuesday that the club has acquired striker Kei Kamara from the Houston Dynamo in exchange for striker Abe Thompson and allocation money. Kamara, 25, has scored a career-high five goals this season for Houston, including three game-winning goals. Kamara scored the game's lone goal July 4 as Houston defeated the Wizards 1-0 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. Kamara has 14 career goals and three career assists in 80 MLS games (50 starts) over four seasons. Kamara will join the Wizards at training Wednesday and will be available for selection immediately.
Kamara, a native of Sierra Leone in Western Africa, started his MLS career in 2006 with the Columbus Crew after a standout collegiate career at Cal State-Dominguez Hills in Carson, California. He scored three goals in 19 games (nine starts) during his rookie season. Kamara then scored a pair of goals in 17 games (four starts) for Columbus in 2007 before joining the expansion San Jose Earthquakes in 2008.
Kamara played in 12 games (11 starts) for San Jose, scoring two goals before a mid-season trade last year sent him to Houston. He finished the season with another two goals and two assists for the Dynamo. Kamara has played in 22 games this season for Houston, starting 20 matches. His five goals constitute a new career high. He has also contributed one assist.
Thompson joined the Wizards September 15, 2008 via trade from FC Dallas. He played in 16 games (eight starts) for the Wizards, recording one assist. Thompson started his career with Dallas in 2005. He has 14 career goals and 12 career assists in 84 MLS games (40 starts).
