"Weird Contests" In Store for Fans Next Tuesday-Thursday

(TRENTON, NJ) The Trenton Thunder, Double A Affiliate of the New York Yankees, will pay tribute to National Weird Contest Week (August 17-21st) by holding a different event each night during their series with the Erie SeaWolves (Detroit Tigers) . The annual event is celebrated each year in places like Ocean City, NJ, and this year the Thunder are joining the fun of Weird Contest Week by bringing some favorites to Waterfront Park.
Mustache Night, Tuesday, August 18 at 7:05 PM - Since baseball began, mustaches have been as prevalent as fastballs. Famous Yankees such as Thurman Munson, Don Mattingly, and Goose Gossage have all sported the look. On Tuesday, August 18th, the Thunder will be hosting a "bash for the 'stache" and will honor and recognize famous mustaches throughout history, entertainment and sports.
Fans with a mustache will receive one free ticket to the game and those who have already purchased tickets for the game will receive a voucher for one free ticket to any remaining Thunder game in 2009 (based on availability).
Fans can nominate themselves for the Best 'Stache of the Night Award by visiting the AAA Guest Services Center on the main concourse. The Thunder staff will then select three nominees to be judged by the entire Waterfront Park crowd. The winner will receive a ball autographed by Hall of Fame pitcher Goose Gossage.
Hot Dog Eating Contest, Wednesday, August 19 at 7:05 PM - Each year on Coney Island, contestants stuff their bellies full of hot dogs and buns on July 4th in the most famous eating contest. On August 19th at Waterfront Park, twelve volunteers will devour these delicious treats hoping to be crowned inaugural champion of the first ever Trenton Thunder Hot Dog Eating Contest.
The contestants will be part of the in-game "Squeeze Play Hot Dog Toss" promotion with Thunder mascots' Boomer and Strike, launching hot dogs into the stands to hopeful fans in the middle of the first inning. Following the promotion, these amateur competitive eaters will take their place in the new picnic area where they will have ten minutes to eat as many hot dogs (and buns) as they can. The contestant with the most hot dogs (including the bun) eaten without it exiting their stomach prior to the ten minute time period will be named the winner. Interested fans can register for the contest by emailing contests@trentonthunder.com or calling the Thunder at 609-394-3300. Important: Fans participating in the hot dog eating contest MUST have a ticket to the game.
Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament, Thursday, August 20 at 7:05 PM - To cap the week off, the Thunder will hold a Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament officially sanctioned by the World Rock, Paper, Scissors Society. On August 20th, players from around the region will descend upon Waterfront Park for the ultimate contest of decision making and chance. The tournament will be a single-elimination bracket-style tournament. Each match is made up of three sets, with each set consisting of three games. The format is best-of-three. Important: Fans participating in the RPS Tournament MUST have a ticket to the game.
"The idea behind our 'Weird Contest Week' was to give fans a chance to be a part of, or even just watch, something they've probably never been a part of before - and of course to have fun while doing it," said Thunder General Manager Will Smith.
The Thunder have announced that all kids will eat for free at Waterfront Park throughout the 2009 season. All children with a ticket, ages 12 and under, will receive a voucher upon entering the ballpark good for a free hot dog, bag of potato chips, and a 12 oz. fountain soda at all 71 Thunder home games this season.
The Thunder are the only team in Minor League Baseball history at the Double A Level or below to draw over 400,000 fans for 14 consecutive seasons and have drawn over 6 million in attendance in its 15-year history.
