Big seventh helps Tornadoes edge Defenders

August 3, 2009 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) Worcester Tornadoes

NASHUA, NH--- Chris Farley (4-2) threw eight innings, his longest outing of the season, and was backed by a four run Tornado seventh in a 4-3 win in Nashua.

The Defenders leapt out to a 2-0 lead with RBI singles from Chris Kelly and Jerod Edmondson in the third and fifth respectively, but that's all they would get from Farley who struck out just two men but was effective through eight.

NH ace Nick Asselin (6-6) for the second straight outing turned in a six inning, three run quality start, but the offense could never capitalize on Worester mistakes. Asselin, who convinced manager Brian Daubach to remain in the game after a ringing leadoff single to Colabello, gave up another to Nick Salotti and was removed in favor of Adam Piechowski. A Mike MacMillan RBI single, an Omar Pena base hit, and Lucas Taylor triple that produced three runs greeted Piechowski and made the score 4-2.

Santiago Ramirez allowed one run in the ninth, but struck out the league leader in homers, Chris Kelly, for his tenth save of the season.

Tomorrow night at 6:35 Worcester will send league leader in wins Ryan Lobban (8-3) to the hill in search of his sixth consecutive win against New Hampshire's Luis Valdez (0-4).
