First August Homestand for Skyhawks
August 3, 2009 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Sussex Skyhawks News Release
After being on the road for a week the Skyhawks will return to Skylands Park on Friday, August 7th. This will be the first of seven home games for the Skyhawks. The first challenge the Skyhawks will have to overcome are the American Defenders of New Hampshire. Throughout the season the Skyhawks have had several great games against the American Defenders. In the twelve times that the two teams have met, the Skyhawks have won 5. This includes the current two game-winning streak the Skyhawks are on. The two teams will face off on Friday night at 7:05pm for the start of a three game series. The second opponent the Skyhawks will meet are the Brockton Rox. This four game series has a lot ridding on it for both teams. In the second half standings, the Rox are only one game ahead of the Skyhawks. If the Skyhawks take the series from the Rox, they will move into fourth place in league standings. Throughout the season, the Skyhawks have had a lot of success against Brockton, taking six of the nine games played between the two teams. This past success will fuel the Skyhawks to sweep the Rox to close out August's first home stand. On the offensive side, the Skyhawks will be looking to the bats of three players, who have been atop the league's hitting list for most of the season. With the progression of the season, these three players have become forces to be reckoned with at the plate. Maikel Jova, Jeremy Hunt, and John Urick will be the three big hitters entering the next seven games. Jova, is hitting a solid .331 and is leading the league in both hits and doubles. Jova has collected 83 hits, 21 2bs, and 51 rbis. Hunt and Urick have been just as productive. Hunt is currently hitting .322, collecting 68 hits and 34 rbis. Urick this season has been named player of the week in July for his work at the plate. Urick has a .317 batting average, driving in 34 runs on 58 hits. The consistent hitting of these Big Three will be the backbone of the Skyhawks offense coming into this home stand.
The pitching staff also has their Big Three that they will look to this home stand. Starters Justin Knoff, Kyle Ruwe, and Carter Clements have been solid on the mound throughout the season. Ruwe is coming off of a complete game win against the American Defenders the other night and will be looking to build off that start in the upcoming games. Knoff also had a successful outing against the American Defenders, pitching 6 scoreless innings, improving his era to 2.89. Finally, Carter Clements has had a successful season thus far on the mound. Clements has sat down 28 batters on his way to a solid 3.69 era. The pitching staff will feed of the starts of the Big Three to bring home wins in the upcoming games.
Finally, this home stand will feature several promotions. On Saturday August 8th the first 1000 fans will receive a logo baseball and Sunday will feature $1 hot dogs. Finishing off the home stand on the 13th, fans will receive hand clappers and will be treated to a spectacular fireworks show. Please come out to enjoy these fantastic events and support your Sussex Skyhawks.
