BayBears Succumb to Smokies Sweep in Doubleheader

July 29, 2009 - Southern League (SL1) - Mobile BayBears News Release

MOBILE, Ala. - Combining for 20 runs on 28 hits in two seven-inning contests, the Tennessee Smokies cruised past the BayBears in both ends of their doubleheader on Wednesday night at Hank Aaron Stadium, 12-2 and 8-1.

In the opener, Matt Torra (6-10) struggled through six as he was obliterated for 12 runs on 14 hits. Tennessee (48-55, 16-17) pulled ahead in the first with Jonathan Mota singling and advancing to third on a double by Doug Deeds. Both men scored on consecutive groundouts to make it 2-0.

Tony Thomas ripped a home run to start the second as the Smokies grabbed a 3-0 advantage. They pulled away with a five-run third as Blake Lalli singled in Deeds, Thomas picked up an RBI single, and Welington Castillo cracked a three-run jack to give Tennessee an eight-run cushion.

Andrew Cashner (1-1) made it through five as he walked four and fanned four while surrendering an unearned run. Tennessee pushed home four more in the sixth with Castillo smacking his second tater of the night before a three-run bomb by Mota.

In the nightcap, Cody Evans set the BayBears off on the right foot with three scoreless innings as he let up just one base hit, but he was pulled in favor of Daniel Stange (0-3) in the fourth. Stange coughed up the lead as Tyler Colvin doubled home a pair to make it 2-1. Hung-Wen Chen (6-8) kicked off the fifth with a two-bagger and scored on a hit by James Adduci.

Chen's only blemish on the bump was the home run he gave up to Orlando Mercado in the second as Mercado blasted he first pitch he saw out of the yard to left-center. Mercado had just returned to Mobile in the middle of the first game after being re-assigned from Triple-A Reno.

Roque Mercedes got torched for five runs in the seventh with the big blow coming off Ty Wright's three-run homer, the third of the night from the Smokies.

The Mobile BayBears have sent nearly 100 players to the major leagues. Their five-game with the Smokies continues on Thursday night with Jarrod Parker (4-5, 3.27) getting the nod at 7:05. For Hank Aaron Stadium tickets, call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
