Salem Red Sox News Release

Salem, VA - The games and fireworks weren't the only thing awful at Salem Memorial Ballpark Saturday Night as the Red Sox dropped game two-of-three to the Wilmington Blue Rocks. The Sox struggled at and behind the plate on Awful Night.

Starting pitcher Eammon Portice cruised through his first two innings of work without an issue, but stubbed his toe in the third inning, throwing two balls to the backstop allowing Paulo Orlando to drive in the go-ahead run. This came after Navarro drove in Daniel Nava in the first to give the Sox a 1-0 lead. Salem was unable to answer the Blue Rocks third inning score as sidearming lefty Rowdy Hardy handcuffed Salem batters through seven strong innings, striking out two Sox. Hardy kept the Sox silent until the sixth inning when the offense finally caught a break against the deceptive lefty. Nava once again led things off with a line drive single into centerfield. This was followed by a Navarro's double into deep left field which put runners in scoring position for first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who sent a sacrifice fly into deep centerfield bringing home Nava and pulling the Sox within a run of the Blue Rocks at 3-2.

The Blue Rocks got insurance and more in the ninth inning against reliever Robert Coello after flamethrower Jason Rice tossed scoreless sixth and seventh innings, striking out three. Coello began the ninth by striking out second baseman Antonio Jimenez and catcher Ryan Eigsti reached base on a swinging strike three and a passed ball. A passed ball during the at-bat of Adrian Ortiz allowed Eigsti to move to second and Coello gave Ortiz a free pass to put runners on first and second for the top of the order. Leadoff man Derrick Robinson flew out advancing the runners to second and third before Coello faced Seratelli, whom he walked. After another passed ball scored Eigsti and moved Ortiz to third, slugging third baseman Mike Moustakas provided all the insurance the Blue Rocks hoped for by blasting a three-run bomb into left field on a 1-2 count, scoring the fourth unearned run of the ninth and bringing the score to 7-2. The Sox were sat down in order in the eighth and ninth innings after a brilliant four strikeout performance by reliever Brandon Sisk.

The Red Sox face the Blue Rocks for the rubber game of the three-game set Sunday at 6:05pm at Lewis-Gale Field. The Sox look to rebound from a disappointing loss, sending Seth Garrison (4-7, 4.44) to face the Blue Rocks before the Sox off-day on Monday.
