State College Spikes vs. Auburn Game Notes

July 1, 2009 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
State College Spikes News Release

-SPIKES AND D-DAYS START SERIES TONIGHT: The State College Spikes welcome the Auburn Doubledays to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for the first time in the 2009 season tonight to start a three-game set. The Spikes took two of three from the Doubledays last weekend.

-LAST NIGHT: State College got great performances from three of their newest additions, but squandered a four-run lead to lose, 6-4, to Mahoning Valley at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Victor Black and Phillip Irwin each pitched a single perfect inning with two strikeouts, and Aaron Baker crushed a triple to right-center field for his first pro hit to drive in a run. Black and Irwin combined with Spikes starter Jason Erickson to allow the Scrappers just one hit through six innings. However, Mahoning Valley scored a run in the seventh and three in the eighth to tie the game, then ended up winning on Justin Henry's two-run single in the ninth.

-PEREIRA TO START FOR SPIKES: Nelson Pereira makes his third start of the season tonight for State College. The southpaw got the victory in his last outing, going three innings in relief of Ricardo Paulino at Falcon Park in Auburn four nights ago. On the year, Pereira has struck out seven and walked three over six total innings. The native of El Savador led the Gulf Coast League and the Pirates organization in ERA in 2008 with a 1.62 mark for the GCL Bucs in Bradenton.

-GRACE-FULLY RETURNING TO THE MOUND: Auburn puts right-hander Scott Gracey back on the mound against State College. Gracey was rocked for five runs in 4.2 innings by the Spikes on June 26 at Falcon Park. The Albuquerque, NM native was the 15th-round draft pick of the Blue Jays in 2008, and went 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA in 10 appearances.

-NEW KID IN TOWN: Evan Chambers joined the Spikes today after signing his professional contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Bucs' third-round draft choice this year, Chambers hit .324 with 11 homers and 39 RBI for Hillsborough Community College in the Tampa Bay area of Florida. Chambers also played for the University of Florida in 2008.
