Double Days Hurlers Deal Spikes Loss

STATE COLLEGE, PA-The State College Spikes' bats were hushed by Auburn Doubledays pitching Wednesday night in a 5-1 defeat at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Auburn (5-7) starter Scott Gracey (1-2) retired 12 straight Spikes batters at one point en route to earning the win. Gracey allowed one run on four hits while striking out seven batters. Josh Wells (1) then finished the game with three scoreless innings, allowing two hits over that span and earning the save.

State College scored its lone run in the second inning, when Edward Garcia tripled and Ty Summerlin drove him in with a single two batters later.

Garcia and Aaron Baker each went 2-for-4 for the Spikes, with Baker providing a pair of singles.

Nelson Pereira (1-2) took the loss for the Spikes after starting and allowing two unearned runs over 1 2/3 innings. Pereira did not allow a hit, but walked three batters and hit one while recording one strikeout.

The Spikes and Doubledays battle in the second game of their three-game set at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Thursday night. State College will send right-hander Kyle McPherson (0-1) to the mound for his third start as a Spike in 2009, while Auburn will start lefty Evan Crawford (1-0).

All kids ages 12 and under will receive a voucher good for a free hot dog, free small soda and free chips as they come through the gates. Plus, the first 1,000 fans of all ages will receive a Bob the Baseball Dog Bobblehead, presented by Sanitary Maintenance.
